Thanks Tim and everyone else for voting and leaving comments - it is much appreciated. Here we are with another update on the wizard, this is coming along slowly, so far i have used 1/2lb of sculpey doing this!! Its gonna be big and heavy. The main details are almost in and i'm playing around with some wrinkle textures and hair follicles. The shape of the ear is gonna be like the right ear and the nose is looking a bit smaller now, although still big and carciturey as i want it to be. However I still aim to achieve a certain level of seriousness in the expression and I think he looks fairly mean and serious. Let me know if you think otherwise. The mutton chops beard looks better than i thought it might, i like it anyway. One more going over and i think i should have a tidy definition of the hair strands on it. I still have one eye to finish roughing in and then its on with the texturing when i have practiced it a bit more. it's basically wrinkled in, then a very small amount of sculpey softner is brushed over the hair follicles which are pressed in with a pointed tool. This obviously softens the edges of the holes and smudges it a bit making it look a little more believable. Here's the photo anyway...

Latest pictures. the main head is nearing completion. One ear, bit of beard left to do then the smoothing and refining of details before I bake it off and move onto the hat jar lid! I will be real happy when this one is done. I ve found it slow and hard going, but still enjoyed it nontheless in a twisted kind of way. It did nearly get ripped off I was so frustrated with it, so its lucky it started to turn out ok when I waved a knife at it.

That some damn nice texturing on the skin there mate!!! Reminds me of 2000AD's Slaines buddy Ukko.

Ahhhh Ukko, wouldnt it be great to have a sidekick you could just belt anytime anything goes wrong. Kinda like the idea of having a mini me. Which would be pretty awesome also. "Minidfb - finish my sculpting for I am going to drink coffee and play on the 360 all day, and then I am going to take over the world!!Muwahahaha"
I think Ukko would make quite a nice jarhead idea, slaine in his warped state as well. I could have some fun there! Oh sorry bru, gonna have to put the dwarf sculpt on hold now!!
Kidding of course.

Nps mate, I think a warped Slaine would be ace, as long as it was Bisley based!!!

Ahh simon bisley is of course a comic god but i prefer clint langleys slaine art its more "realistic" look appeals to me more. i have to do some serious research to choose some art to base a sculpt on if i were ever to do one, but i think 2000 ad offers some good scope for characters beyond GW and rackham etc.

Some good news folks, I have been approached by a small mini company who are producing a skirmish game and they want me to do a test sculpt for one of their races. I'll be sculpting at around 65mm so we'll see what happens. They have got some good artists doing their concept art and the sculpts he showed me are superb also. I'll be posting up some pics of my practice piece soon - it's a 70mm troglodyte elite warrior/king type character on a display base which cane be fitted to a regular 50mm base. I am sculpting it with casting in mind, whether i do actually cast it or not remains to be decided. Keep your eyes peeled!

Thanks everyone. I doubt they will allow me to post any shots when I do the test sculpt, they are still awaiting the final concept art for the race I am doing so I have some time before I start it yet. Hopefully my practice piece will be at a worthwhile stage to post some shots of over the next couple of days. The display base is ready, although it is only a great big rock on a slant in two parts, just got to bake the top bit he stands on. The pose should be quite dramatic though, I'm aiming to capture him in a battle rage, roaring a warcry carrying a shield and double headed axe.

OK, here is my practice piece and latest sculpt to see what I can do in 54mm scale. Its meant to be a troglodyte elite warrior. The head will be kind of a cross between a gorilla/caveman/troll type look. At the moment I am playing with the back texture. The legs are baked now, so I cant easily change them, but the wrinkled texture doesn't look too bad. I want a slightly scaled/wrinkly leathered look. The scales around the groin area are in a similiar style to the Games Workshop troll texture but I attempted a texture from a home made texture stamp on the back which looks like toad skin. I might play around a bit more with the fur loin cloth. The base is a basic rock. Its not how I imagined it really and to be honest I'm not sure if I like it - let me know if you think it sucks it may convince me to start again on it. I will be sculpting the feet onto it so I have to get it looking good! Cheers folks.

That looks very promising mate. Is this a production one or literally just a practice to see what you can do?

Hey Tim, this is a practice sculpt to see what i can do and to be honest I feel pretty comfortable at 54mm human and above looking at the progress so far - dwarf may be a challenge but that and 30mm will come later in the year. I am still enjoying working on the busts though to be honest, so I will be getting back to them in a while. I already have a request for a Wolfen Jarhead in a few months time.

Some more work in progress here, crap photos - sorry! The shield will have a flap of leather added to the bottom so thats not quite finished yet and there is some tidying up to do here and there as well.

This mate is looking better and better. I love the shield and the head of the trog, the scratches in the skin on the legs are they going to be there in the final piece.

Looks great, DFB. My only nitpick (and it may just be the camera view) is the decapitated head looks a bit flat against the shield.

Hi folks. Tim - The scratches were meant to be a shrivelled leathery texture which doesn't seem to work too well - I dislike them the more I handle the model to be honest. The inside leg wrinkles dont look too bad but the calf ones are definately going in the dustbin!
Jabberwocky - The head on the shield is not meant to be a decapitated head, it is actually a shrunken head, it just needed to be more soggy, manky and a little flattened. I just dont think I have conveyed enough wrinkles on it really and I havent googled any photos of real shrunken heads - and im not really sure if I want to either! The camera angle is partly to blame, although there are a few areas on the face that could be rounded some more. I'll fix that though. The shield itself is meant to be an old window shutter and I may put some hinges on it to indicate more of its makeshift nature.

Looks alright that mate, looking forward to seeing it all done. You should offer some of your stuff to Hasslefree's White Metal range.
