Okay here are some finished photos of the assassin rat. They are not good photos - taken on an overcast day so they are grainy and there is unfortunately a residue of milliput wash that crept into places it shouldn't have. Hope you like them anyway!!! Its on its way to be cast on monday and who knows i may offer to paint it for him as well.

Glad to hear everything is going well. WoM had gotten even quieter with your absence. SC and I (and it's mostly SC) are the only ones posting these days. Magie comments on SC minis, but that has been about it with Bru and Tim working so hard. Anyway, it's good to see you have had a bit of time to continue on your works. The rat looks awesome and has such detail!

It really has been rather quiet around here...oh well, at least i've had Jabber to keep me company, with magie occasionally, and now you (at least once you get back) The rat looks amazing. I had almost forgotten about him actually, and kept thinking about your Darkhand sculpt. Great sculpting work as usual. When you get your models cast, do they go to a specific website, or how do they get distributed? Oh, and i threw in my vote

Thanks for the vote scarecrow. The three rat busts I'm doing will be owned and distributed by GreyMatter Figures ( http://www.greymatterfigures.com) these are the people who brought you some of the resin Rackham sculpts and they are currently doing alot of new ranges by various other companies you will see about the net. They are casters themselves, not sculptors and their work is outstanding. Hopefully as I get better and do more work, they and other companies will be picking up more of my stuff, I would certainly like to have my best work available to buy.
The Darkhand bust I am currently retaining and they are producing it for me, a final estimate will be given to me when i post it off with the rat on monday and my intial rough guess estimate was right it will be in the £15-£20 range. I will be offering a small discount to people who pay by cheque in the UK also, international customers will have to pay by paypal and therefore I wont be able to offer them this discount (sorry!) I will try and keep the price as close to £15 as I can though but it will depend on the price given to me when he takes a look at the bust and works it out exactly.

Just read the Malus Darkblade chronicles and your sculpt, the mega twisted looking geezer, is more in tune with any dark elf within those tomes. The book constantly describes de's as scarred and Malus himself enjoyed mutilation to his 'friends' ! I think the important thing with de's is they are not pretty faced high elves, they are the antithesis and this is a sculpt that could, at last, represent the tortured existence of Naggaroth. Congrats. PS... don't know if u intended the fig as a de, it's just a subjective response

Well, you certainly have produced about as good as I have seen for busts mate, and that is no small feat. I am glad for your success, and wish you all the best.
The final version of the rat, with the hood and eyepatch, amazing.

Hello guys and girls, I am back after a full week of laziness, three square meals a day, free drinks and girls in bikinis constantly walking past. I am still n hols until sunday as well!! Thanks for the comments on the bust. I am certainly enjoying doing them so hopefully the next ones will get better as time goes on.
Dennis - The sculpt I imagined as half orc but it could also very easily represent a dark elf and I agree with the thoughts on dark elves being twisted and not pretty regular elves. Maybe not the women though hehe. It can be intrepreted as you like, I imagined the paint job being very much in keeping with dark elves whiteish/pale bluish tones though.
Work will begin on the next rat tonight - the warrior. His face will be bulked out to reinforce the idea of strength and the fact he is bigger and stronger and there will be head armour and some braided fur details. I may also do a paintjob myself on the rat assassin when i get my copies, have to see on that one!

The rat dood is looking good, I particularly like the teeth, 2 questions for you 1. How do I go about buying one of your sculpts 2. Do you fancy doing a Daemon (Demon) head comision for our company? If you do just P.M. me and we can talk about it

Hey daemon, the Darkhand busts are all gone at the mo, I will get some more done if I get anyone else asking, will need a few more people to do another run realistically. The wizard and the first of the rats are currently available from Grey Matter Figures here.... www.greymatterfigures.com/index.php?p=1&cat=26I am painting the leather hood of the rat at the mo, must say without blowing my own trumpet - it is looking good! this is the first large scale piece i have ever done and it is good fun. Yes, there is more work but I don't really mind that much - lots of opportunity for freehand on the hood. Mine is plain leather as you will see though. Piictures are coming in here soon, i have most of the wip photos actually done, just two more to take, may even get it posted up late tonight. Definately interested in sculpting demons, but it will have to be after the rat series. I will send you a PM. dfb

Right here we go then, latest bit of work to show off. First up I decided to have a go at painting one of my own sculpts so I emailed off to the folks at Grey Matter and got myself the rat assassin (entitled "In The Shadows"). This sculpt was inspired by the range of forgeworld busts especially the dwarf, orc and of course the stormvermin. I always wanted these but as they are out of production so I decided to sculpt my own versions. Mickc22 on CMON did a great WIP on the stormvermin which I followed, I'll post a link at the end to that. Without further ado.... I'll post all the steps I did so those new to all this stuff can see what l did. Everyone else can ignore the drivel and go straight to the pics! 1- Clean resin thoroughly with a short soak in warm soapy water and a toothbrush scrub. 2- No primer was used, sprayed chaos black straight away. We'll see if that comes back and bites me in the arse later. 3- Started with the leather hood as this is the most interesting part for me. Wanted to create a nice leather texture using my usual method which is.... a) painted a solid skull white b) painted a thin wash of bubonic brown over hood - darker in areas of shadow and thinner in highlight areas. This is the start of the mottling effect c) Painted a wash of brown ink over entire hood going for a really random patchy, mottled look. d) Painted a thin wash of bestial brown over the ink and reinforced here and there to start to bringing the colour solid looking. sometimes a use a few different browns as well, just mix it up to mottle it as much as possible. e) stipple a dry brush with bleach bone over the top and repaint over it to tone down where required. You will notice some blobby bits - unfortunately i got some air bubbles on whilst doing the washes and no matter how hard i tried i couldn't pop em all before drying so now i have a bit of texture as well If anyone has a good method for avoiding them let me know - I'm stupid. This method gets a nice looking leather. The pictures above don't show the finished result yet but demonstrate where its headed well enough. This is an example of the forgeworld stormvermin, painted absolutely loverly by mickc22 coolminiornot.com/217855

Nicely done on the hood so far. Can't wait to see it when it's finished. The Batman bust (He he, it's batman, that's awesome XD) looks great so far. Oh, and from the looks of your pictures which are great, this won't be a dire thing to look at, but as i was browsing the older posts, i came across This

Yeah, thanks for that link, although i did read it a while back it was worthwhile re-reading it as i wasn't sure where Tim positions his lamp. For mine I use a small light tent (which came with a selection of coloured backgrounds). I do actully need to print a bigger faded blue/white gradient and get some velcro fixings for it as i prefer this to the plain colours i got with the tent. I want the background to fill the whole tent and a4 doesn't cut it for busts of this size. my light is a daylight bulb, directly above the figure which eliminates all shadows but maybe doesn't always show off the front as sharply as Tims, i normally position the tent to face outside daylight as an extra measure. I have a tripod but can never be bothered to set all that up and use the timer. This will change however and the slightly blurry edges i get on my photos will hopefully be gone forever.
More pictures coming soon, some more done on the rat, plenty more work done on batman, textured the face very subtly, evened up the left side of the face and working on its shape a little.

Okay I am back in the sculpting seat, december is a busy month at work and I have been distracted by other things as well so no sculpting got done. Just had a week off work, spent most of that in London, went to the boat show, west end theatre and the natural history musuem which was very inspirational looking at the dinosaurs and some of the extinct or odd mammals. I will post pictures at some stage. I have no photos yet, but will post some up next week of a hopefully near complete rat warrior. I did some more work on the helmet a couple of days ago and it is looking more bulky and warrior like already.

Hey Magie, well I was inspired to incorporate some dinosaur sculpting into the project lists, but we will see.
More work done last night - looked at the time when I finished and it was 3am - whoops. The warrior now has a beard, kind of in a pony tail, hanging straight down. Today I will sculpt further details on the helmet, thinking of trying to incorporate some horns onto it. After that, its just the cheek armour to detail and I might make an earring for him to.

Well, start throwing ideas at me bru for a dwarf, although there is a queue before it gets done, it might be good to have some advance thoughts and ideas. I have this warrior to finish, then the Rat King and then two possible commissions to follow up on so it may be a while. My own personal projects outstanding are red riding hood and a giant, but who knows, I might fancy a dwarf jarhead inbetween!
