Here's a little update on the wizard. I have been really slow on this one, but I'm getting there. I decided to try my hand at source lighting, so let me know what you think. Its my first attempt so advice on how effective it looks would be great. The picture isn't that great but it shows enough I think to give you the idea.I have started the first coats on the base so i hope to have this guy completed soon.  The staff is nearly finished, just the middle section to paint, rehighlight with white and the metallics to polish off. I will gloss coat the central gem after adding some highlights and a matt coat of varnish. The base and cloak will be painted last as i want to conceal the join on the cloak with some procreate. **UPDATE** Since taking this photo i have toned done the strong yellows and white on the scarf thing with some reds and orange, looks better now i think. Base painting is underway!! |

Love the colour variations on the staff arm.... your colours are so bright! hurts my dark elf eyes but has a certain 1990's look about it. Not a bad thing! What do you think of procreate?? I'm interested to hear some tips ps, i'm gonna copy that base, it's fckin awesome |

Hi jnr. Procreate is ok if a little overpriced. It just saves on mixing time really. If truth be told i prefer milliput/greenstuff combo as this is still much stronger. I do love the grey colour though. Also procreate does not respond so well to saliva. I found that bits were rubbing off if I wasn't careful, touching the tip of my sculpting tool to my forehead and using the skins natural oil as lubricant worked much better and yielded no issue with bits coming off. I haven't tried water with it yet. I would try it as you may find you like it better than gs. As for the base - copy away, I'm sure you can improve upon it!! I painted some light sourcing on it today so some more photos soon!

Looking really good DFB, it always amazes me how bright and vibrant you get your yellows and reds! Really do love it, and it works amazingly well on the empire fire wizard.

Man, feels like forever since I have had time to just browse around the forum.
These two wizards are really great. Love the bright wizard, and that base is out of this world. They will definitely demand notice on the table. The source lighting looks really good, but I wonder if with a flame that big it wouldn't also highlight his face (hard to tell with just the one angle of the pic though).
On the other wizard, looks like a great start. If that is the base he is going to be on, I think it is going to come out awesome.

Just a quick update and not a great photo really - still struggling to get some good wip shots without setting up good lighting etc. Really slow going at the mo, but this is nearly finished, just some tidying up on the wizard and source lighting on one side of the base and the top edge of the base and its done!  |

Thanks guys, hope to start on him again tonight, inbetween my sculpt off entry (base is all but done). What disappoints me is that the scarf looks a whole lot better in real life than the photo conveys - whether the osl on it is realistic or not the colours just look pretty cool - in my opinion anyway! I will take it down to the GW store and see what they think, when I showed it to Gareth at Plymouth GW he cussed me a few times upon examination! Well anyway, it will soon be done and I can try out my light tent and see if I can get some nicer shots - any tips Tim, your photos always show your work off to the best as if its right there in your hand!!!  !!! |

Thanks Razh, its pretty much what i have been doing apart from measuring the distance. I have a daylight bulb rather than a flurescent tube though. I recently bought two other lamps to illuminate through the light tent sides as well. I have a really good camera as well with super macro.

Here is a nearly final stage set of photos for the wizard, still not happy with them - im gonna have to try and dig out my tripod and see if that makes a difference as they are still poor quality and not showing the mini at its best. Still got the base to finish......lol  |

It looks great, the pics are small, I typically resize mine to around 450 pixels depending on the mini sometimes I'll go up to around 550 dpi. I also don't post stitched images in the forums I do that only for the Cmon Gallery but again once I have stitched an image I will resize it again to around 450 dpi.

Hehehe, thanks Tim - you beat me to the punch - i was gonna ask you what size you publish yours at, then i realised i just needed to save one and open it in Photoshop to find out so you've saved me the trouble. If I can get my photos as good as yours I will be a happy man/dog! I was really annoyed I couldn't get some good pics last night as I wanted to get it onto CMON . I wanted to do one picture with base and one without to see what difference it makes and because Im impatient to get it on and it'll probably take me a little while longer to paint the base as I am trying osl on it. Trying being the operative word. Cheers.

Whoa, here is an update, although the photo is only a webcam quicky - my camera batteries need recharging before i can try for something better. Anyway, as you can see it's a bust, except i sculpted it on to a spice jar which i intend to use as a brush /sculpting tool jar. Its just a simple goblin head done in super sculpey and it took about 6 hours plus in total to sculpt. I started just after 1.00am and looked up at the clock and it was 6.30 am -- straight sculpting couldn't beleive it!! The whole head minus ears was done and the skin texture was complete in this time. Then I decided to sleep for a bit and finish it later. The ears and the ear ring were finished and a bit of a tidy up was done later on and I think i may add some more detail to the eyepatch as well. You cant see much of the skin texture in the photo, but its all there. Foil provided a scaly texture and wrinkle lines were scraped in and criss crossed across the skin surface to provide a nice realistic finish. I am pretty happy with it. Its not an imaginitive sculpt and was done straight from my head with no plan or concept image whatsover -- hence a plain goblin. Hope you like. Someone has done something similiar to this and painted it up on CMON, the idea is not mine although they did it on a paint pot. I'll post links in CMON spotter if i find them. Something is urging me to send this one up to you to paint for me Tim! I guess I will have to use it as practice to get my greenskins up to your level though lol.  Some more of those Howling Griffon marines coming up soon by the way! Oh yeah, I got Talisman revised 4th edition the other day so I quite fancy resculpting the characters for the game (the included plastic minis are not great) and making a nice base for each one as well so look out for these if I go ahead with it! |

Thanks Tim, I may pluck up the courage to paint him yet. Still have to bake it off though! If I do another one, I may ask you to paint one and I can pay you or do you a sculpt for yourself as payment. Gotta get through my next lot of spices first though to empty another jar. Although I think I may have a jam jar which would be good for water instead of the old mug I use!! Any ideas for something to go on it?

I like the idea of doing something orky. It did start out as an Orc, but it ended up looking more goblin like than i wanted. I found an old jar today which I have already started to sculpt a sea monster on. I will edit this post and put the photo on later. I think I may do an empire wizard as well, quite fancy that and maybe even get around to have a go at making a mold and casting it in resin - i have the kit to do it, its just getting the balls up to have a go as I dont want to f it up with a badly made mold. Need to read up on the whole process as well as get some basic lego blocks which I here are great for mold boxes.

Quite a cool little sculpt you have there.
If you want to do one around a water jar then a dwarf is your man, that beard would cover a load of the jar!!!!

Yeah, I don't tend to stop sculpting if i have the time free and everything is going well. If i had made a cock up I may well have put it down. I just kept going, its a shame i take so long to paint anything! I think my record is ten hours straight on a clay piece and that was alot simpler than the goblin.
Bru, I am going with a sea monster for the water jar, a dwarf head is another interesting idea. Maybe if I can think of a good design I could do one on a spice jar and sell it on ebay. I'm definitely keeping the gobbo one though! I think I could get serious about doing a load of different busts, I really enjoyed the process and it is very good sculpting practice working so large allows you to get it looing good with no excuses for poor anatomy. I would recommend that anyone who likes their sculpting should do a bust! Plus I'm real pissed that Forgeworld appear to have none available (couldnt afford it anyway though) so thats another good reason to do some.

Nice idea, a sea serpent winding around the outside of the jar, or a massive octopus or squid all tentacles around the jar and going over the lip......
A Dwarf head would look cool on a mug or tankard.
