Just amazing. The metals are just perfect. I find the dirty metals very inspiring. And the red/white clothing is very cool. The white is just so perfect, how do you get such a perfect white on a black undercoat? And the shaven head looks so cool. How do you paint shaven hair (and beard)?.
Cheers

Lol soo many questions well the white is simply first done with a 50/ 50 mix of Skull White and Fortress Grey, then it was shaded with thinned Fortress Grey added as a wash. All I did then was to highlight back up to Skull White. Lastly in the deeper creases I added some thinned down Codex Grey for deep shading. The shaven head was done by applying very thin Fortress Grey as a glaze over the scalp, this took a couple of goes to cover and look like a shadow of hair then I thinned down Codex Grey and added that, it looks better in the photo than in reality to be honest but hey if it works it works.

Wow, amazing. This is why I registered at this site. Mind if I copy that scheme for my standard bearer? I'm painting one for my local shops army and was looking for a scheme. The metals are just amazing. Could you tell me how you did the Gold/Brass bits? Cheers, Wolf Fang

thanks Wolf Fang, I cannot take credit for the colour scheme as it is supposed to be for men from Talabheim in the Empire, so of course you can use it, as for the Brass areas, I painted a basecoat of Tin Bitz, then went over first with Brazen Brass and then Shining Gold, finally I added a little Mithril Silver to the Gold and added that, with each successive highlight I tried to leave a little of the previous colour showing through. Good luck with yours mate.

One thing I will say for Citadel Paints, is there metallics are really well done.
Great addition with the beard and the boots, he is really coming together nicely. Only suggestion I have right now, and this is more personal taste than anything, would be to match the braided metal piece on the bottom of the plates over his thighs with the braided metal piece on the top of the back place.
Oh, and I also want to chime in about how great this site is. Very inspirational.

and some more Not happy with the glove in the sword hand yet, I am also getting some horrible glare of the metals in the rear shot that will go when it is dullcoated hopefully.

Looks excellent!
I think making the laurel wreath around the skull's head on the armor gold or bronze would brake up the metal area nicely.

It doesn't show very well but the laurel wreath is done in a bronze like colour, I might repaint it green to give a good contrast.

I see what you mean about the wreath. It may come up better with an angled picture, but if it looks good IRL I wouldn't change it. This guy is definitely coming together really nicely. Can't wait to see the banner...

Fantastic, now if it were mine, I'd lop that banner off and give him a shield and get him straight into my next game.

Ok I am now working on the Banner, I am happy so far the hammer head is fine just a little work to do on the shaft the skeleton also I am happy with the black looks ok in reality but in the photo's you cant realy see what is going on so you will just have to trust me on that one. Full length pics this time if this does not work well I will do a crop of the Banner.

Me want one, looking great Tim, i noticed you said you dullcoat your metals! do you not find it kills the highlights?? what am i saying, your metals are perfect, so how do you compromise that problem... this could help me with my GK Termie, he's to glarey

Post by Tim C on Mar 3, 2007 18:41:32 GMT
Yes dull coat does have the effect of killing highlights so I don't do it all the time, I may not even do it on this one sometimes just using a glaze of very thin paint will take the shine off but still leave the highlights showing, it is a tough call I would say if there is any doubt in your mind then leave well alone. The difficulty is that when taking pics with true metals it is very hard to get decent ones without too much glare. I am going to leave this until it is done and then possible take it from there but if I like the finished effect then it will be left alone.

TimC: Bone looks great. Everything looks great... even the black that you think we can't see. I think the black will be much more obvious once you finish the rest of the banner though. No suggestions at this point, just straight envy...

I am so glad you got those glasses... The skellie banner is looking great. You had mentioned the glove on the sword hand--did you add to that? It looks a bit flat in the rear pic compared to the boots, but that may be a function of the pic.

Thanks guys, Jabber no the glove hasn't been touched over yet. I am still undecided as to how to go about it, there is not so much obvious relief on that glove and therefore I think what ever I do to it it will look flat and I don't want to over do it if you know what I mean. When I can get a clearer idea of how to tackle it I will deal with it then, for now though it is on with the banner.

Got a little further along with this guy now, the banner is very nearly complete, then all that is left are a couple of small items and the base. The script on the banner reads "Meus Imperator. Meus Vires. Meus Rector". This is latin for My Emperor. My Strength. My Guide. For the first mini that I have painted with in glasses I am realy happy with the results and am now planning my next few painting projects.

Thanks guys the wings were base coated in Scorched Brown then shade with a Scorched Brown Chaos Black mix, and then very light dry brushes of first Graveyard Earth, then Kommando Khaki and finally Bleached Bone. The White feathers were base coated with Fortress Grey, then shaded with thinned down Codex Grey and then highlighted up with Fortress Grey mixing all the way up to White for the final stage.
