Had encouragement from everybody here to try and practise highlights on plastic minis and so here was my first practise! In my opinion I need to still work on getting the lighting effects better and water my paint down a bit more but I was quite happy with the cloaks finish - Comments and criticism and tips for improving much appreciated! Thanks, Jake

Yep it looks like you are going in the right direction with the layering technique. Be careful with this technique not to go from the darkest shade to the lightest shade too quickly as this will make the highlights look too forced, the more intermediate layers you use going from dark to light the smoother the eventual look will be. Of course as well thin paints will also give you a smooth finish too but one step at a time.

Yep def' a good start, I agree with all that Tim has said. I would keep that mini to practice on, doesn't matter if you go wrong then you can perfect the technique before applying to your minis.

Looks good Red! I can make out the various shading and highlighting, and that's the first step. As Tim said, next up is smoothing the transition between colors and then pushing the shading and highlighting more.

My latest project is a Posessed Theoden sculpted by ukfreddybear. I am hoping to have this done in time for the National Painting Competition (for those who don't know, no I do not mean Golden Demon). Here he is: I still need to add the Grima and Gandalf. And here's another project that I am working on. Here is my converted Buhrdur Hill Troll Chieftain: Thanks, Jake

Looks good so far mate, white is not easy to do and so far you are managing it quite well, I can see you have got highlights there and to be honest I don't think it needs alot more. If you look at the character Gandalf the White in the movies his costume is not pure white at all.

Aside from the diorama a little, I have completed my Gulahvar and I am very happy with how he turned out, took a little longer using highlights. The picture make the chest look drybrushed butit's not just so you know;) C&C welcome. Jake.

Very nice mate, and TBH I don't mind the drybrushed look to him, makes him look more ancient.

That isn't a bad job, possibly a little too green for my taste. I haven't painted one of these yet though I do have a few to do. I think if I were to paint one I would paint it all in greys and then add green glazes and maybe the odd purple glaze here and there too just to add tonal variety.

Thanks guys. I think after reading some feedback I will go lighter on the face, especially as it will also then follow the movies better. Bru - I couldn't have progressed as much without the help I have had from the members of this site

I have began another miniature. This next chap is going to be Eomer and I have decided to take the base from Shelob in the LOTR Chess set for him. I am pretty happy with how it looks so far and I will begin the painting on him tomorrow or on Sunday depending on how things go... Anyway: Comments and Criticism welcome. Thanks, Jake. ps. sorry about the dull pictures
