Wow! All of the minis are just so awesome, in my eyes GD standards. I bet JRN is drooling all over his keyboard ;D My favourite is Boromir. The cloak looks really great and the mud splatters look realistic. As I said, maybe one of the best LOTR paintjobs I have seen. You will definitely win gold! The Stern convo looks stunning as well. The freehand and metals looks great, but I have to say I don't like the red colour very much, it looks a bit pink. After judging previous years winners, I think you have great chances to take home the gold in this category too. I can't really comment much on the wood elf and Be Lakor, but the bases looks really cool. The wood elf base is a fave, how did you make it? Knowing your skills in modelling and painting, I would guess you will take home the gold in these cats too As I have said before, you may need some bodyguards protecting you from all the angry silver winners ;D And your GK termie/acolyte convo has really inspired me, and seeing Stern IRL also inspired me very much. I think I will pick up a box of GK termies (and probably a Stern too) after GG and give the GKs a try. And what's the grey putty you have used on the base? What's it used for, and is it useful (in other words: should I buy it?). And where can you get it (in Norway)?

@mikkel, thanx for the encouragement but there are a lot of minipainters in Norway that might disagree with you I'm looking forward to the event a lot anyhow... ...the grey/green putty is Milliput, it is a 2 part putty that sets rock hard overnight. It comes in varying fineness, this one is standard Milliput and the cheapest, i find it really useful for basing and it is easy to sculpt/drill and when dry will sand and cut well. It is very popular in modelling. The Milliput Superfine is good for convos etc and you can mix it with GS, it's a bit like brown stuff in that you can cut and sand it when hard and is great for armour. I bought some on holiday in Ireland but any good model shop should stock it... you can also get it online cheap, try ebobs site www.ebobminiatures.com/

The spellsinger's base looks like the presculpted ones from MicroArt, is it? If so is the quality any good?
The demons base is the dogs bollocks! And is very fitting for the miniature.
The blends on the LoTR fella are very nice and contrasting, especially for a LoTR mini, as the ones iv seen are normally more 'realistically' painted, in a sort of 54mm+ style.
Silver fella, some nice freehand going on there, but im not keen on the red's.
As you might have noticed i can't remember the names, im useless with that!

@matty, the Spellsingers base is a modified job from Microartstudios, it's from the forest line. They are very well cast and sculpted, i'd highly recommend them... however they are perhaps 'over the top' and will only suit certain minis, the scale is much too big for LoTR for example and i scaled this one down to suit the elf, you'll also need to do a bit of greenstuffing to make any mini look convincingly grounded on them... this is nitpicking though, and at the price it's handy to have some around. I also used them as inspiration to sculpt my own forest bases for 54mm scale ... oh, thanx for the nice words...in defence of the red it has actually come out a different hue than the more subdued colour it is, i think the lighting affected the minis colours too much, the green is also not as it should be I will post some pics taken in Daylight when it's not -10C outside ;D

mmm... very nice I'm glad you won't enter the Swedish The FAng Boromir looks great, and my favorite. it pic seems to be slightly out of focus over the base. the be'lakors base is really cool too the only thing I'm not a big fan of istrhe red on the stern, really . Looking forward to see all these great minis progress André

The free hand is really great. And the spell singer base (is that GS or something else?).
Great work all around, can't wait to see them completed.

OMG.... this red ain't to popular at all!!! The weird tthing is i love it, mixed with the green IRL it looks very 'Regal'! I'm gonna stick with it and hopefully the RL pics will change a few of your ideas... but it has been a great criticism in that it is now making me think more about final highlights!! White really should be avoided, i don't like it, the best minipainters dont use it (IMHO),and it is the heaviest pigment to play with.... this could be a period of revelation.. i'm off to play with paint and se how some 'alternative' mixes turn out on paper

Great looking start to these. Starting at the top....
Boromir looks outstanding. The weathering on the overcoat is spot on. Beautiful skintones. The base is great, although I might suggest a few highlights on the vines--the leaves looks good, but the vines seem a bit flat (although it maybe just a function of the picture). The only weak spot (relatively speaking) IMHO are the metallics. They seem a bit flat compared to the rest of the piece. The sword in particular looks to be of fairly uniform tone.
The freehand on Stern is awesome! I like the eyepieces as well. I am afraid I'll have to agree with the group in regards to the red cape. Sorry!
Nothing to critique with Be'Lakor. That base is incredible--excellent execution of a great idea.
The spellsinger's base is amazing. If the rest of the mini is this good, I think you'll be the odds on favorite in the category!

Thanx JW, i agree on the vines, it had got to the point of 'that'll do' but ofcourse it wont! i'm in the process of sorting it out with a little desert yellow & bleached bone....... as for the cloak of the stern convo i have folded to public concensus and at the mo i am waiting for the 5th red glaze to dry, lo and behold it looks much better!!.... thanx to y'all... pics to follow + a new fig i did yesterday just to get away from the stress of comp painting!

JNR:
Boromir: This is the point on a mini where I start to get really bored, the last little details. Keep at him because this guy is looking awesome. Things that I like: the base (you seem to have a gift with these), the weathering on his clothes, the face, and his hair. What still looks undone is the sword, the horn, and his boots seem unfinished.
Stern: Things that I like: The turqoise, very nice, the writing on his cloak, the free hand on the front. What I don't like: Hate to jump on the band wagon but the red does not seem right. That being said, I have felt that way about skin before (that is usually where I start painting), and continued painting the rest of the model and it comes out fine. My advice would be to continue with the rest of the model, and then we can see how it turns out.
Be'Lakor: What can I say, that base rocks.
Spellsinger: Those horns are coming out nicely, and again, the base rocks. How did you do it?
Termie: Great conversion. Can't wait to see the painting.

Cheers Mousekiller i'll post up some pics of the changes tomorrow i hope. The spellsinger base is not my own but a modified round forest base from micro art studios, i'd highly recommend them...

Looking great again mate, I don't wish to be a harbinger of doom but in the frontal picture is that a mould line I see on the shoulder pad, could be the photo though.

This one is looking top notch. I will tell you what it is that I am really enjoying about your pieces is the free hand, it just adds the extra character that makes the mini more than just another mini. Also, the glowing blue eyes...

Wow. It's so awesome. In my eyes, the boromir mini is very close to perfect. If Boromir don't win the LoTR category, I don't know what will. And the GK is really coming together now, and the reds are much better (imo) now. But if you liked it, I hope you didn't changed the reds just because some of the WoM members said they didn't like it. If you like something, just give a damn what everybody else says!
I can't wait to see the GW NE website in some months. It will say: 1st place lotr: Dennis Holinger, 1st place 40k: Dennis Holinger, 1st place whfb: Dennis Holinger (and all the rest cats). If you win everything, that would be so cool. The norwegian minipainting community has no idea what is about to hit them........

I think you made the necessary changes to Boromir. Nothing left to critique there! The reds are better IMO too.
