cool idea, in all honesty, im not keen on the skin or the base, but personal taste aside, a good job, perhaps some more highlight on the skin though

Yeah, the base is crazy - going for a caribbean kind of colourful look. The skin is dark in the photo and the highlights are probably too subtle to see in a photo you have to see it in real life. I probably won't do much more to it. Tidy the lines on the base, the eyes and I will leave it at that. I did the skin by washing black over a dark brown which had highlighted areas painted on and repeated the process many times.

Very cool. The pants are great and I like the weathered look of the metals. Great work.

I like it all apart from the pattern aroud the base, it detracts from what is a great mini!!

Ok, well one other idea for a base decoration would be to do a skull decoration around the edges, maybe some sea shells, barnacles etc to give it a dark Pirates of the Caribbean Davy Jones crew style look. and cast it. What do you think??

good idea but imho if You'd like to achieve better execution You should've add pink/purple for highlighting fleshtone; check Bragon's magnificent elephant: the rider has skin painted that way I'd also like to see pic of base from above; brushthralls made great tutorial for making ship-deck bases (personally check & confirmed: works ) overall - nice and original idea, that's what counts!

Thanks for the tips demi. That elephant is in my top ten favourite pieces on cmon, makes me shudder with eye candy overload!
This was the first dark skin I have ever painted so I wasn't too sure it would be good, I just knew it would look nice with the trousers. It was a standard flesh tone to start with and then I changed it. Getting some good highlighting and shading is something I will try and work on for the next one. I'll try your tip!
The base is made from greenstuff with sculpted wood grain and knots, with even planks. I did a rickety wooden base with uneven and irregular planks but chose not to use it. Looks pretty good. Check out my ogre pirate standard bearer in my wip section I think that photo might show the base a little better. I'll take a look at that tutorial you mentioned.
I will be getting some good photos of this one soon anyway with some luck, as I need to update my cmon gallery with some new stuff!
