Finally finished this guy. Crappy pics, but the metals and the black look better IRL, though the gems look worse. All things considered I'm pretty happy with him. doesn't quite compare to JNR's Ranger, but I like the result. C&C appreciated, Wolf Ps: The buttons have been painted after I took the pics. :s

Yep the red looks cool the black looks undon to me but that could be a product of the pic as there is a lot of shine coming off the mini. Overall though a pretty decent mini.

I like the colours you have chosen, nothing too saturated which in my opinion is how a ranger should be. I took the muted earthy colour approach and the concept from codex that the ranger cloak behaves like an elven cloak in that it changes colour to blend with the background, but codexs are there to be broken i think the single best improvement you could make isa coat of matt varnish or dullcoat, i'm not so sure that the entire rifle should be wraithbone but maybe it is nice touch with the freehand, the cloak cries out for a load of it but you have resisted wisely and kept it subtle. I know what you mean about gettin' on with other minis, i seem to have been painting my ranger for ever, have painte 2 or 3 30mm minis as a break!! 54mm scale has different demands and i find it very time consuming, i spent a day just layering the cloak! post the results soon

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'm sorry for the crappy pics of the cloak, but I just can't seem to make it less shiny. I give my models a wash of Black Ink after I prime them, to fill in the crevices, but this leaves it very shiny. It isn't a big problem most of the time, as I put a basecoat on top, but on this one's cloak it takes away the effect of the highlights. I'll see if I can sort this out with some Matt varnish as JNR suggested, but I can't seem to find acrylic matt varnish here in Belgium. It's either shiny or satin. Anyone know any good brand they sell in Belgium? I rushed a bit on the rifle, since the deadline for the compo was today. (I'll get the results the 14th of April BTW, so I'll let you know how I did. Judging is the 4th, but I'm leaving for Greece the day after, so I won't know how well I did 'till after I get back.) Personally, I think the red turned out to dominant though. If I had to do it again, I'd paint the inner cloak in the beige colour and keep the red for the loin cloth. but that's what you get for be a Saim-Hann fan. I call it ceremonial clothing. Anyway, thanks again. Cheers, Wolf.

black ink?... try just giving it a watered down black next time, this keeps it dull and still black no shine from the paint.
thats what i do when i have parts that dont get coated with the prime.

Sorry it took me a while to get to comment. I like very much what you have done with this ranger. The red is very well done. As you indicated, the cloak didn't photograph too well. I also like the beige under tunic as well. IMHO the backpack could use another highlight as well as the rifle.

I like the colours, especially the red cloak and the beige tabbard. The rifle also looks cool, though I am not familiar with eldar fluff and not sure what it is made of. My only critisism would be to highlight the black area on his torso and the black cloak. But other than that, I think it's a really great mini! Keep up the good work ;D

Thanks for the comment guys. Got back from Greece yesterday and discovered that I have actually won the competition. A nice surprise to end a nice vacation. He will compete in Dice Day 7 tomorrow, which is sort of the national championships here in Belgium. Let's hope I have he does well. Cheers, Wolf

Thanks for the compliments guys. Just got word that he also won gold in the open competition at Dice Day. Earned me a Terminater Librarian. I've been told it was the toughest category, but I wouldn't know that since I wasn't there. Cheers, Wolf
