OK. Well, after painting my Scions of Ra non stop for what? Three or four months then rested for two weeks I decided it was time to pick up the paint brush again. But what to paint? I have a bit of a choice here (>Click me<), but I decided to return to my beloved short legged, first army. Dwarfs.
I will be working through my pile of minis, hopefully getting better and improving my abilities and skills. Hopefully I say. There is plenty of things I want to improve on, I will not be Golden Daemon level, that's for sure but I definitely want to be a high standard. Anyway, you can look forward to seeing more minis done when I get the time (as I now have a job *shock horror* ).
Right the mini.
As mentioned above I have returned to a dwarf, in this case it is a slayer. I haven't painted one of these in so long and it gives me chance to do a number of things. One, is an impressive base (he won't be a gaming piece, unless I keep him pinned into the base, rather than glue him) and another practice skin, perhaps even a little bit of small freehand in the form of tattoos.
His base I wanted something to stand out but not too much so. As you'll see below it is rather large, I hope to balance this by painting it a neutral colour (grey-ish) and have some snow on it. A friend has said I should add something on the bottom, a skull or something similar, I'm not sure on this. I was, however, thinking of slapping some snow on there. Again a bit of friendly advice is that I shouldn't use too much, otherwise it might distract from the mini itself. What do you think? Have a look:
The base is done from cork tile and the slayer himself is only pinned in.
the next stage I undercoated him. Again, I tried something different. I have had a great experience using grey over black to paint stuff like flesh on. It is more neutral compared to white and not as difficult to cover as black can be. So, having purchased some of the new Foundation paints the other weekend I tested out Astronomican Grey. Ever watered down it went on well and I saw no covering of detail. I have left the axe and other metal areas black .
Then I tested out yet another Foundation paint. Tallarn Flesh. Using this as the base I started on the flesh, washing it first with Bestial Brown (VGC) to get the definition and then proceeded to paint the flesh with, Tanned Flesh + Dwarf Flesh, Elf Flesh (VGC) but I found this to be a bit too orange for my liking, so I added GW Elf Flesh before finally using bleached bone as a highlight. The highlights are a bit subtle, but are there.
For the hair, I used the Avatar of War Dwarf Slayer "mousekiller" painted up, and wrote a tutorial for. I did however change a number of things. My base coat was Dark Flesh + Scorched Brown, then adding in Carmine Red (VMC) before moving onto adding Hot Orange, then Orange Fire and Sunblast Yellow into the mix at various stages to complete a darker and perhaps meaner (for hair) look to the beard and crest.
This is as far as I have gotten. I won't get much chance to paint until Tuesday and Thursday now, I'll update when I get round to it. =)
Now, any criticism, comments or suggestions from you all?
