I am going to have a bit of a rant now so apologies up front. I work on the railways on the signalling and telecommunications department, basically what that means is when something with the railways signalling systems goes wrong it is guys like me that have to go out and try and fix it.
Last night I got a call from signalling fault control to tell me that the level crossing barriers at a place called Coalville had been damage by a motorist.
This never ceases to amaze me that idiots like these take their lives into their own hands like this.
I got their at about 1 'o' clock in the morning to find that the barrier had been smashed and the actual framework mis aligned by about 4 foot at the barriers tip. This means the guy had got trapped under it and then just blatantly reversed out. Now my point is the barrier sequence is quite simple, Amber light first to warn drivers that they are going to operate and then red flashing lights to say that the barriers are about to lower now this is only done when a train is going to be signalled over a crossing or in a failure situation or for testing but the general member of the public would not know this.
The halfwit last night couldn't wait for the short time it would have taken to wait for he train to pass but instead tried racing the barriers which meant as the boom had started to lower that he ran flashing red lights and was probably extremely lucky not to end up underneath a 200 ton freight train.
Well it made a very long night for me, and will make another long night tonight as there is more work to be done.
The idiot never stopped after wrecking the barrier which is about 2000 pounds worth of damage. F*****g twat.
Rant over.
