I've posted this here for now, if i get good results i may write a proper tutorial. (i've not plans to sell any of these, this is purely for my own use at this stage).
I've decided to try casting some of my own bases, for my initial experiment while i get the hang of the moulding i'm using a GW resin base that was part of the basing kit as the test "model", next stage is to make some greenstuff versions of my own.
Heres the original
To make the mould i used a two part silicon gel putty called siligum from Gedeo, the two small pots cost £10, they do a version three times as large for £20. The moulds are reusable.
You simply roll equal amounts of each colour together for about a minute, its much softer and more putty like that green stuff, it doesnt stick to your hands and is non-toxic.
Then you push the object into the putty and wrap it around so its at least a few mm thick.
Then leave to dry for 5-10minutes, the mould simply pulls off the master.
Then you fill it with something, for this experiment i'm using resin plaster, about £10 for a largish box, its not quite as strong as resin but its much stronger than normal plaster and seems to work fine as a basing material.
I'm going to try something called clear resin next which can be used in the same moulds, but takes longer to dry and is a bit more dangerous to work with.
You dont even need to line the moulds with anything for the plaster version. After 30 minutes (i found 45 was better) the plaster is set and you can pop the base out of the mould.
Heres the finished version on the right and the original on the left, it comes out chalky white so i stuck a quick ink glaze over it to help the camera pick it up.
