My sculpting project for the Mechanical Mayhem competition is currently driving me mental. It's complicated, taking loads of planning and progress is slow. To keep me sane I have also started doing what I hope will be a less strenuous sculpt - Puppet Angel! I've only done the armature and basic build so far. He's at 90mm scale (so comes up to waist height against a normal 90mm mini). I'll be bulking out his basic shape next. Also included are a few pictures of what he will hopefully end up looking like.

Well not too much to comment on right now I guess... But what is that from?? It looks like it'll make a great sculpt, but I have no idea what it is! lol...

From possibly the best episode of Angel, nah, definately the best episode of Angel ever. This clip should show you everything you need to understand! www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVn2CT8y9AU

I wasn't going to start properly sculpting tonight, because I don't have a small brush at hand to smooth off any of the Sculpey, but I couldn't sleep, so I've done a little work on the creases of his trousers. They are rather more ragged looking and accentuated than they will be once finished as I have only been able to work the shapes in with a mini-trowel tool, but they are coming together. Quite a lot of the trousers will be hidden by his shirt and coat in the end but I want to get them right. I still need to make the bunching of the fabric at the base of the legs more realistic I think. Currently I reckon that the backs of the legs should be more bundled just above the line of the top of his shoes, and then hang down with less creases below that. Does that makes sense to anyone else? I also really should have done his boots first, but I think I may do those out of Green Stuff intead of Sculpey. I don't have any of that at the moment either so they are on hold until I can get to town and buy some GS.

I finally got a bit more done on this (I seem to have no free time at the moment unfortunately) and I have finished the front of the shirt. The buttons and collar will come a bit later. I seem to be having a majorly bad photography day today, so the picture is a bit iffy. In the second (black and white) picture I have layed a thin sheet of Sulpey over him to roughly represent his coat, then layed the face and sword onto it in Photoshop to check that everything is roughly the size and place it should be. So far so good I think.

It is indeed looking very promising indeed. Would you be considering having it cast?

Glad people like him.
As far as casting goes, it's something I have been considering trying out for a while now, largely as a learning excercise, but I'm still not happy enough with the overall refinement on my sculpts to have given it serious thought. They tend to be a little bit rough around the edges as I am very much in the learning phase still you see.
I'm not set against the idea of casting up this guy to see how he comes out, because his pose makes him a good candidate for it I think, but I'd have to see when he's done.

It looks a great job to me, i suppose sculptors are as obsessive about finish as painters and you'll see things we can't, but i reckon this whimsical little guy would go down a treat with many a collector

If you cast it, I'd def' buy one at least. It's already a great looking piece, and I loved the episode it's from.

The shoes haven't really had any work done on them yet, which is kind of an odd order to do things in I'll admit, but that's just the way this one went. They will be quite a bit bigger than they are now, and get laces, soles, etc.
As for the casting thing, can anyone here let me in on some info about what sort of costs and techniques would be involved? I'd guess making a simple two part mold, but keeping the hands and sword as a separate piece, and the head as another separate piece would be the best bet.
And then there's the legality issues of reproducing and selling on something like this, even at cost, because it uses copyrighted material.
Probably dubious, but not something I'd get in any real trouble over I guess.

Pants, there goes all my hard earned cash then!
Lots of sculpting stuff I want gathered together on there as well as interesting options for casting, and because of my laziness I'll probably just do an order from there rather than searching out various ebay bargains.
Cheers for the link anyhow!

Tiranti are brilliant people, i remember years ago as a student everyone at sculpture used their stuff as it was by in far the best. they have excellent customer relations and if you give them a ring you'll find no question to difficult.... as for copyright you could be walking on thin ice, unless you can prove a significant difference from the orignal or in your case a significant change in media...i'd ask for advice from a copyright lawyer before going pro... if it was my painting you made the work from i would expect atleast a royalty
