Right i've been attempting to paint my space marines as Lamenters for about a year. But i've never been happy with the results i've achieved as I feel that they are too yellow and end up looking like Imperial Fists. So I found a yellow recipe over at B&C which I quite liked the look off and decided to try it. So out comes a test model and I begin. Let me know what you guys think, as I really need feedback as to whether I am going too brown with this or to help me improve my painting. The final pic is just a comparsion with a model I had painted using the old yellow method. So obliviously the test model is very WIP, but all C&C would be most appreciated.

looks good to me mate, more shading, lamenters need to look dark and brooding imo, good work so far ;D

I honestly don't know much about codex or lamenters but i can give you a subjective opinion on the comparison. I much prefer the more mustard yellow you have achieved rather than the previous sunburst type, but if it is a more yellow hue you are going for you may want to lighten the colour with some sort of sandy yellow, something earthy like bubonic brown from the GW range or equivalent and perhaps some sand yellow itself. How you shade and highlight it is really going to make or break what you wish to achieve, you may find shading best achieved by adding a little purple to your base colour, it's not the exact complimentary but it should indicate the type of hue you'll need.. for highlighting stay away from white as you'll turn beige or fawn, maybe try a subtle highlighting using thin glazes of yellow itself to bring a little more saturation to the overall effect. Good luck, experimenting with colour combos is half the fun If i could just add that unless black and white checks are necessary i would leave them be unless you can make it crisp and convincing, these checks overlap and are 'untidy'

I don't know alot about the lamenters but I can see that your yellow on the WIP is a definate improvement. One way to get a good yellow is to highlight up from Snakebite Yellow to Leprous Brown and then Leprous Brown to Golden Yellow, takes a while but it works well., I shall stae the obvious about shades and highlights and also that the cheques need tidying up but you have probably got that covered anyhow.

Thanks for the quick replies guys!
The checks are needed Jnr, its one of the things that i really need to improve on, as I feel that my brush control leaves me down. But i'm going to keep struggling away with them, otherwise i'll never improve.
As for the yellow I agree with you guys, I much prefer the current mustard one, but still need to highlight and shade it. I am thinking of a few glazes of a brown and then the addition of bleached bone to highlight.

Definitely a great start CC, I think the others have hit all my critiques already (checkers). Really solid start, can't wait to see more.

Very good start, CC. I join the chorus and say I really like the darker yellow. I don't have much to add to the critiques already mentioned.

Nice look on the Lamenter marine, good dark yellow, fitting for them. If you are struggling with the check pattern, why not try a permanent graphic artist pen, to draw the lines on you need? I use Pilot DR 01, for anything like that.

Spent a while yesterday cleaning up the checks with the smallest brush available to me. I didn't take any pictures unfortunaly. Apart from that I'm going back to finish off the yellow, in between getting my mm competion entry done.
I'll post the yellow recipe Rogue as soon as I get home and dig out my recipe notebook. It might be next week at this stage though.
