And everytime I'm in the store, I forget asking the staff.

here's the latest, i'd like an opinion or two as to wheither i should take the highlights to hotspots or leave it as it is, i do think the plum/red areas need a little but in real life the green highlights are quite bright I really need a critical approach to everything here as i hope to enter this guy in Norways GG! I'm a bit concerned too that i've made the gold too dull on the blade.. ....ps, i'm treating this paintwork as under Zenithal light so maybe that will explain dark areas I just noticed this is about 4 X Real life..oooouch! I'd also like a little help in GK iconography. The scales are because my GK army shall be (as will be painted on the banner) 'ORDO IUSTUS' or order of justice for us mere mortals... puh.. i need a drink,, yes, another pps tanx for all the nice remarks.. now get nasty or i'll win nothing!

Good lord, that free-hand is great!
If I had to critisize as you asked--I'd say the weakest point is the gold. On fantasy models like 40k where utter realism is not the key, I would shoot for a more warm, full colour.
Also I'm not sure if you meant this banner as the one you would right ordo justice on but if not I'd put somethng interesting, an inscription or the like on the red part. It looks a bit flat now.

That is nice, very nice in fact and the freehand ia awesome, maybe just a bit more white in a highlight or two on some of the corners just to make it sing so to speak, the weakest part if I had to pick one would be the blade under the scales, to me it looks a little off and not your usual high standard.

YES! This is the crits i need!! I think now the blade is far too tarnished and i'm modding it as i type. The flat red area will have 'ORDO IUSTUS' in the font on the GW Wallpaper for Daemonhunters. I will leave all the final highlights until i have finished the whole banner, then it will be easier to see what needs what... many thanx guys, more of the same is soooo welcome, please find something you don't like and tell me ;D And now for something totally unrelated! I'm hoping to have a conve done on Andreas mini Ithrandir, 54mm version , to look like this; I'm crap at sculpting etc so if anyone can recommend or take on this job i'm willing to pay a heafty commission, it will have to be a bloomin good job!

No problem mate Its interesting how differently painters and sculpters (me) take critisism--in painting critisism is fine becuase you can go back and re do something but I get real pissed wehn I find something is wrong (not that it shouldnt be said) becuase you can't go back-you have to start from scratch. Look forwards to seeing the rest.

Thanx MM 'n' Tim. I have gone a wee bit further and tried some of your suggestions. The Gold has been totally reworked but i'm having a painters block on it I even sanded it back the paint was beginning to have a texture!!! I know you have some Tutes out there Tim on how to do Gold and i'd really appreciate a link or a quick once over (U C I'm still the student!) The pics look a little glossy but a little Testors magic will cure that at the end, and smooth out some of the highlights (ps. i won't be putting testors on the metals, kills them, instead i'll be using Humbrol Matt Varnish which i originally thought was no good but if you scrape all the matting agent of the bottom, stir it and shake it for about 2 minutes, it is the next best thing to Testors with a better finish for metals!) I didn't sleep last night, 1 Northern Lights, 2 I repainted the whole text area twice, i made a few major cock-ups A tip which would have saved me would have been to laquer the red first with 2 good coats and then i could have cleaned off the crap freehand without having to repaint the plumred.... may others learn by my mistake The missus tried to wake me as usual around 6.30, i was only just gettin' to sleep! U can imagine my reply OK guys get stuck in, here's the attitude, this is crap, how can i help this poor bloke! I'd like to also take this opportunity to say 'God Jul og Godt Nytt År' til alle sammen på WOM (Mikkel can correct me if i'm wrong )[that's Merry xmas & a happy New Year to you all] I'm going on holiday now for cheap beer, free food and even cheaper jokes, look out Ireland!

Sorry about the setback, Menace...lesson learned . I am by no means an expert, but the NMM gold is looking good to me. I don't have much to contribute in that regard. I think the sword handle at the top of the banner looks a bit flat at the moment. Have fun in Ireland and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well!

Metalic gold is a pain to be honest, the way the paint is made means that for some reason it never goes as smooth as the silver's do. I find that it is best to thin the crap out of it in the pot, it gives a much better finish but not totally smooth. The down side is that it needs regular stirring up to keep the metal pigments suspended as with them being heavier than the suspension fluid they settle out quicker. Another good tip is to give golds lots of glazes with extremely thin (basically dirty water consistency) browns and brown to black mixes, applied in layers and left to dry fully each time takes off some of the hard edge, occaisionally you need to rehighlight areas that start to dull down but on the whole the effect is quite passible. I only ever have worked with GW paints so I don't know if other manufactuers like Vallejo are any smoother but for me these things work just fine, the goldy colour to the Orc I am doing at the moment was done this way.
