The only real help I can offer is to keep your paints thin and have a very steady hand and also a fine brush. Flow enhancer in your paint is also a good idea too.

A couple of tricks I have used (or blatantly stole...hehe). Micron pens with a .005 nib have been great for me. I usually use them just for eyes, but I have used them for freehand design--see my blue reptus in my gallery for that. The other is a tutorial over at brushthralls.com. To keep your hand steady you may find it useful to fix the mini down in a position comfortable to paint so you can steady your painting hand with your free hand...
You may also find it useful to laquer the area to be worked on first, this way if you make a disasterous stroke or it turns out tits up you can remove it without ruining the base area, i use a little brush soap and a old paintbrush (i've got good at cleaning it off... and giving up!)
