This is going to be a birthday present for a friend of mine's 4 year old daughter. The request was for a white body with pink mane and tail. Let me just say upfront painting white is a pain. I started with VMC light gray, then worked up to MSP linen white, and finished with VMC white. I still have a ways to go on getting the blending smoother on the body as well as working on the legs. I am probably going to put her on a rock outcropping for the base and do a little freehand somewhere on the hindquarters. I was going to try and come up with a fancy way of writing her initials. I think pink is the latest trend this season...perhaps some space marines are next??

When painting a large white area like a horse i go a little darker than it should be to begin and work it up to white... then i cover the entire area with several thin glazes of white (using a glaze medium). It tends to pull together the blending nicely... if i'm doing socks i then work them back with a thin black glaze which ofcourse turns out grey...

Here is some slow progress on Starmane. I have put together a rock outcropping using some CD's. My main question is this: What color should I go with for the base? The standard gray, or more of a sandstone/limestone color?

My personal feeling is that you should have a strong contrast against the horse, with it being white I think a dark colour for the base is what you need. i would go for a dark grey colour for the rock and then maybe add some green and brown washes for weathering.

You have a big set for doing this much white on one mini. I hate using white even on small areas let alone a whole horse. Looks great so far. I have trouble with bases myself so I cant help you in that department.
