crappy pic and not much painting, just slapping paint, but I needed to show you the colour theme... I'm getting ready for some serious critique on it... but I couldn't help it, I went a bit wild...

I am not so sure that the purple and turquoise go together, though it is an early stage other than that nice work so far.

I'm searching of a "cool-hued" colour to match with that purple. I tried this one to see how it looks. I would be more than willing to read any suggestions from you or anyone else Tim. Just figured the 3 colours used (tunic, purple, that light green/turq) were split complementary and would do... But I am not an expert in colour theory, so waiting for advice there

Since I didn't have enough feedback, I decided to go the hard way and keep the scheme. He's getting a bit dark but I like him... Did some nmm and retouching of basecoat on robe... I'd be really happy if I had some feedback

Well I did say it was early and now I am seeing it further along I think you have done the right thing in keeping to it. It is looking excellent.

With every pic I see this mini just gets better, I don't actually the sculpt but the painting is just great. Keep it up you are onto a winner here.

Great standard of painting, sorry i didn't get to this earlier, but i'm not convinced the pastel turquoise colour and the purple are doing each other any favours as you may have hoped. I think for it to work as a compliment the green may need to be more on the yellow side of the colour wheel Personally i would have preferred a colour more harmonious for a high elf, the purple and green makes me think more of drows... perhaps something closer to the purple... violet or something along those lines I wouldnt change the gems though, here the contrast works well in bringing them out.. my 2 kroner

Very nice adjustment on the purple cape. This is definitely being picky, but a few glazes might still be needed--I can still make out the transition point as you go to the lighter purple. It is probably just the photo, but the highlighting on the robe looks better to me in the second to last picture as opposed to the most recently one. Did you scale back the highlights?

Thanks for all comments. I really think that I might need to do some glazes like you said jw Now I need help and some hints for the back. I don't have a clue on how to properly highlight it, or any constructive ideas... I thought making very small freehand patterns on the cape to make it interesting. Thanks for help, looking for more

The cloak is so smooth in the sculpt i think you'll need to be creative to make it more interesting. I would look at it that it fans out and thus may catch more light, so to make it exciting i would use an exaggerated gradient from dark at the top to light at the bottom....

Great tip menace. Actually I was also thinking of a gradient there but you are most right! I would go from bottom dark to top light whereas your choice is much more "correct". Thanks a lot. What would you think of a subtle pattern also by freehand?

What would you think of a subtle pattern also by freehand? I think if it still needs something after the gradient it would probably best suit something subtle as you say... around the bottom edge of the cape, but not to take away from the sculpted decoration already there. it could even be as simple as a line

How about this for the freehand--since there seems to be a crescent theme (the gold on the front part and actually the highlighting on the ring in the center makes it look crescent like), doing some interlocking crescents. Three or four overlapping in some fashion.

After your comments I tried a gradient but it is very subtle... Still not happy... but it's getting better...

I think you are on the right track but just need to keep going lighter like you say very subtle at the moment and the transition is difficult yet not impossible to see.

It's getting frustrating, I always had truble blending subtly, and now I need something more dramatic I kept subtle ....

Yes it is frustrating but the effort will be worth it in the end, the mini looks good as it is but it can look so much better with some more carefully blended highlights towards the bottom of the coat.

The other tricky bit is that I have found that (particularly for subtle things) the effect can look better in real life but not so good on camera do to the lighting or photography technique. Who knew that mini painting would require skill in photography? ;D

I have to back up Jabberwocky's comment & that the mini changes in different light, so you have to imagine what it will be like with Dullcote when you look at the photos... i'm always pissed that artificial light drowns out highlights, so maybe for WIP's i may try just daylight..
As for the drama... i probably sound like a broken record but you could try a glaze medium neat with a little white, put it around the bottom and feather up with a damp brush... you should have a few minutes of working time. repeat as you would with layering, just working closer to the edge

This is indeed a beautiful mini and one of my pile of unpainted minis to do. I will be watching this with interest.

I do I think the skintone is very different that you normally see on this mini, makes her look more drow like, it is funny as I have been thinking about painting this one myself over the last few days, once the Elf is done I might just have a go at it.
