Hi, I just got back into mini painting a few months ago, and I'm looking to add dark lining to my minis. I know the general idea is to thin the paint down to almost a wash consistency, but instead of the paint staying just in the area between a gauntlet and skin for example, I usually end up with a little paint on both surfaces. Any tips/suggestions for doing good clean dark lining? Thanks

Try adding black ink instead of water to thin the black. just an idea i got, don't know f it works.

I suppose just thin paint, a good brush and a steady hand.
Nothing more to it than that really.

Yep the key is to keep the paint thin but not so thin as to be uncontrollable then a very fine brush and a very steady hand. Good eyesight also helps a little too.

Just my advice here; take it or leave it as you see fit.
Don't black line unless you're separating two very dark colors (i.e. black and grey, blues, etc.). In the case of browns, use a dark brown; reds, use a dark red, so on and so forth. Some people (and I was one of them) used black for lining all the time. The problem is that it can be too much and gives a mini an almost cartoonish look.
For the lining process itself, thin the paint at about a 2:1 or 3:1; you want it thin enough to flow, but not so thin that it'll just spread everywhere. Using a flow improver greatly helps this for the obvious reason: it helps the paint flow better.
Use a brush with a very fine, sharp point. It doesn't have to be a small brush (such as a 5/0 or 10/0), just one that can keep a point. W&N Series 7's (the ones I use) are great for this.
Don't overload the brush! That tends to be the biggest problem since having too much paint on the brush means that it will just explode as soon as you touch the mini. When that happens, you can't control the paint anymore.
Just take your time, use a good brush and use very little paint. Hope this helps.
