Hello, I am not sure where to post this here, or even if this is appropriate for this site, but I thought that I would ask here too... I seem to be having a problem painting rusty, weathered bases, as can be seen from my Mechanical Mayham entry: www.stanscorner.com/Miniatures/2007/slides/00549-urban-mammoth-13316-achilles-class-biomech.htmlI have received some advice on another board, but was wondering if anyone here might has some suggestions, too. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I would paint the metal first, either with metallics or NMM. The over the top use washs/drybrushes/glazes of browns and oranges for rust, and blue/greens for oxidation.
Basically the same as you would weather any metallic surface.

Hi, as matty said first you must do the metal/nmm, then apply a mix of dark fleshtone and very very little fiery orange or orange fire very diluited, in fact i think your mix is too bright and don't do well the trick. Other advice put the mixture random and don't cover all the metallic area but let some parts clean.

When I paint rust, I start with the browns. Start with a very dark brown with a little bit red. Then gradually build up the colours with lighter rust colours. The messier you are, and the quicker you do it, the better result you will get. At least thats my experience lol. Use a crappy paintbrush to sort of make a pattern of rust. I use a old GW small drybrush, and I have clipped off most of the hairs, this works great for rust. Make sure to use very little paint, and just dab the brush at the area you want. Make sure that some areas will have lighter browns, and some darker. Then paint metals at the edges of the rusted area, I use boltgun metal. Then maybe some thin brown/red washes to finish things off. Hope all of this makes sence lol. Some pictures of rusty things I've painted:
