I am not an expert in freehand, in fact I have not even given it a real try yet ;D I think Dennis might be your man here. But what I have heard is to practice it on paper alot before painting it one the mini. And for the first layer of the freehand, use a colour that is very similiar to the base colour, because this makes it much easier to tough up if you have made a mistake. And then gradually build up the colours. Hope this helps

I use a 000 W&N Series 7 Miniature brush for freehand, i've found the most important thing to good tight freehand is a stable base and a stable hand. The best way is to position yourself in such a way as to have no movement in the figure or painting arm. I prop both arms against the edge of a table. Then practice strokes before committing to paint! it's amazing how when you come to paint your brain remembers the trial strokes and you are less likely to make a mistake! The consistency of paint is also imperative in freehand, it has to be fluid enough to run perfectly of the brush but not diluted so much that it spreads or 'blobs'! this is a case of trial, but always test the fluidity of tour brush on a piece of plastic first, paper is no good as it draws paint out of the brush in a different manner... lastly, patience
