Something i've never tried is the LOTR mini range, i've never really gotten around to it, any suggestions as to a good starting mini, and perhaps a good balanced 500pt force to go with if i decide to go a bit further.

Lotr minis are not easy to get a grip of, they are smaller in scale but patience and perseverance are well rewarded. Gondor is a good choice a limited pallete makes them quick to paint and with a balanced force can be very effective on the table. Uruks (Isenguard) are another good choice too. For a little more variance with colours Rohan are nice minis though some of the armour on the heroes can be quite fiddly to make look good. I started my Lotr mini painting with Gondor minis (though I am now in the swing of painting Dwarves). At the end of the day it is all down to taste and how or where you think your skill level is at the present time. A good idea I think is to buy the collectors guide and take time looking at all the different races and factions and then make a selection after that.

Good solid advice from Tim, i like the look of the haradrim and when i've finished with elves i may be tempted to them. High elves can be quite simple to paint when you get in the swing but their brothers from the armoured wood elf range are a little more tricky, quite compex armour.

Uruks are a great start, it is fairly easy to get a simple but effective looking mini I have found. It's what I started on and I'm glad I did!
