Sod secrecy This is the prototype convo for a unit i am putting together for gd 2010. I hope to make a bucket load of changes and would love to discuss those with you guys, be as hard as you can, it'll be no harder than i'll be on myself! d

wow, yet another great piece in progress! I think the armour however, could do with a little more contrast, maybe another shade and higlight to make it pop?

Good to see a brush back in your hand dennis. I like how this guy looks. Not big on how the cape is painted at the moment, though i'm not sure what painting you've actually done so far, if any. The snow on the base looks a little...what's the word...plopped on? I would personally spread it a little more evenly around the base. That's all i can really come up with so far besides the current paintjob not being how I would do it (that's a personal thing, though it is nicely done otherwise). Lookin forward to seein how this all comes together.

Hi mate, the convo is very good and works well, I am guessing that this is going to be completely repainted as this does not match your usual very high standards of painting though it could be the picture. I would lose the metallic purple as for me that is not working.

thanks guys, it isn't painted to a standard, it's really to get colours and feel. the cape aint done yet, i just casted it and I know if i just make something for myself it'll not get placed. Metallic purple has to go! I'm really not sure about the base, the rules are that it must be a gaming base from gw, makes sense for a unit, and i thought i'd beef the base up a bit.... other things (i dont like!); the motif on the banner the pale blue gold so basically everything!! except the baby dragon Please remember it's about the convo at this stage, this is how a whole de core unit will look, the command unit will be the dogs danglies! Here's another attempt at improving my pics

Any suggestions for simple basing? must be a standard gw base.. i thought the snow would be the simplest for a unit, that's techstar microballoons on this one, as scarecrow noticed i did just plop the stuff on

I would add a bit more than just snow, but snow is good for DE in my opinion. Get some rocks and what not in their to break up the white stuff. Maybe use a big pine tree in the middle of the unit for a filler.
Awesome job on the mini btw. The only thing that looks a bit underdone to me is the gold, particularly on the chainmail. Maybe another highlight to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the mini.

I like the gold and metallic purple, more dirtiness on the gold would be good though. The banner motif looks cool but i think the blue needs to go and replaced with purple or something. The thing with dark elves is the colour schemes that work best are fairly limited which restricts being experimental and creative, most people seem use purple and black. I really liked those dark elves you did a while back with the spider motif - what happened to them? The base is not normal standards for your minis, i liked the previous dark elf bases you did alot, and that nurgle one was awesome, although that was a display standard one which i guess is too fancy for a practical unit. I would go with mousekillers idea, slightly more fancy for command figures though and failing that reuse your old design which looked great. i like snow bases on dark elves though...
I guess if this is all prototype prep for 2010 your going to be playing with ideas alot and its going to be sweet watching you post up your work.

Thanx for all the comments guys (n dolls, well you neber know ) A big update, the green work has a lot of smoothing out to do and i'm not touching the paint for a bit. I'd love your opinions on the changes to; 1. the cloak 2. the sword 3. the base 4. the changing from mail to a tunic (although i think i like this so much i won't change me mind!) and wheither or not it was better before. Kind of feel sorry for Ithandir and Be'Lakor but i've only got 10 months to do this unit and i'm completely obsessed with it, that would be reading the Darkblade chronicles, awesome. So here goes the pics;

All changes, as André said, make this model look much better. I love the change from the mail to the tunic. I may have to try that sometime...only thing i would adjust on that part is maybe adding in some sort of border to the sleeves, like on the tunic. The base looks great too. Can't wait to see what else you do

...only thing i would adjust on that part is maybe adding in some sort of border to the sleeves, like on the tunic. bizarre mate, i was thinking that too! and in the musician she already has same and i thought it would be good for cohesion... so it's borders on the sleeves for sure

I was trowling through some warhammer forums n found these images. I really like the GW dark elves so i think i'll use these schemes as a base and use blue/purple washes... especially the freehand design opportunities, guess i could develope those a bit. Whatja reckon guys?

I love the picture at the bottom. Did you have a color idea for the tunic? If you were planning on doing some sort of freehand work on it (which i of course think you should do since that's an awesome idea), you may be best of using contrasting colors, so having say a dark blue/purple tunic may not do so well with black freehand since it might blend together a little to much. Just an idea to toss around, but i think if you've got a great flat surface like that, freehand is a must. Doing the washes sounds like a great idea, to answer your original question

Definitely will need the contrast scarecrow. I reckon i'll make the the blue/purple/ grey a fairly light tone and do the freehand in a rich purple/black, that should make it pop....
...unfortunately have to work today! will have the updates at the weekend;)

I like the changes made apart from the mail to tunic change, I think the mail suited it better but that is just my opinion,

I liked the mail too Tim, but I didn't want to have a core unit that looked to similar to the executioners i'm basing them on, and it gives me some freehand opportunities i think! eek, loads of extra work! All i managed this week was to finish the cloak, i've used g stuff, pro create (not tooo fussed on it now) and milliput superfine (defo my fave) to get it as smooth as pos, i hope i haven't gone overboard, comments needed!! + if the fig can't stand base to base would that rule it out of a unit for gd?? If so the cloak will need some serious trimming!!

Thinking back on the other units i've seen that were submitted to GD, i don't think they have to be rank and file. I think i saw a unit of high elf Great Swords that were all just standing in random spots, and that counted as a unit. Don't quote me on that though, but i don't think they have to be in line. It's a little difficult to tell (for me anyway) how the cloak came out considering the brightness of the background and the stuff on the cloak. From the side picture, it all looks good, but can't say much for the other one. Just me though

Wow all those putties together sure looks weird. I really like the changes you made for the model. At the beginning the pose seemed a bit odd, but together with the cape it looks very convincing. I always like the dark sinister look, so if you would copy the colour scheme of the pictures (especially the last one) I'm sure it will look amazing.

Looks great! Only minor thing I would add is maybe some little metal but in the bottom of the standard pole, but that's just me can't wait to see it painted!

Lovely conversion work, Dennis! The freehand is stellar as always. I know you're early on with this fellow, but I think the gold could use a bit more shading.
