Having read all the Warhammer Fantasy novels by William King (the Felix and Gotrek saga) I decided to "finally" pick up his work set in the 40K universe.
Black Library released a 3 part collection entitled "The Space Wolf Omnibus" a few years ago and they re-released it this past fall. It features 3 novels by King and "follow(s) the adventures of Ragnar the Space Wolf, from his recruitment by the Space Marines on the savage world of Fenris to his adventures among st the stars"
I have almost completed the second novel and I have to say I am struggling to get through the books. I enjoyed the first novel more than the second as it was about the process of Ragnar entering into the Space Wolves and all the things he had to go through to finalize his enlistment.
I liked it because not being a 40k player and not being well versed in the 40k history it gave me a insight into the Space Marines that I didn't have previously... I also liked the conflict Ragnar had with a fellow Space Wolf inductee. Ragnar has a hate-on for his "brother marine" which predate their becoming Space Wolves. This conflict adds some great tension that mus be resolved if both marines are to move forward...
The second book is Ragnar's first mission among the stars and whether the character of Ragnar isn't deep enough to sustain a novel or the story lacks a certain something I just find I have to make myself read 10 pages a night just to get to the end of the book. I guess I don't care that much about the character... The tension is gone as the mission they are on is, well, flat...I just can't say I can recommend the second book...
I will read the third book and do a follow up once it's done and I am hopeful it picks up where the first book left off!
I did get the collection of three novels for under 10 dollars USD and for the price alone I can recommend the book but if you are a fan of William King I have to say that it is an average read and unless you love the 40k universe and must read all the stuff out there I might just stay way...
I give the Space Wolf Omnibus a 5.5 outta 10 on the Reddog-O-Meter
