I am finally working on a non-competition mini so I can post a WIP log! Here you go--very early on, of course. The idea for this one is a "black orc"; a larger, meaner version of the standard greenskin. I am going to try and keep him a very dark green and have added a skull "facepainted" on for added barbaric intimidation. The shine of the paint is a bit aggravating, but should be taken care of with the Dullcote in the end. Comment and critiques always wanted, although at this early stage there not much to comment on, lol.

Ambitious idea with the facepaint, really hope it comes off.... will try and generate some ideas about how to go about that one!
Don't worry about paint surface at thisstage, you know the end result, if your unsure in process you could always give a thinned coat of dullcote and continue, I do this the odd time and I think dullcote is good to keep working on after.... probably not everyones advice ??

I have heard of various painters using Dullcote as a "save button" in between layers or before an ambitious freehand project when using acrylic paints. The theory I guess is the underlying work is protected so that the added paint (being water soluble) can be wiped off carefully if necessary. Never tried it myself, though.

I do this for freehand, it works well. If you make a mistake you only need to load a little brush soap on a reasonably stiff/older brush and gently remove the mistake, don't leave it too long though! The dullcoted work will be unaffected

I've layered on some RMS leaf green to the model. The highlights from here will get quite small as I don't want to lose the darkness of the skin.

The blending on the flesh looks great, it does need small amounts of highlighting to give contrast, but you know that... the head is a little confusing for me at the mo, teeth need a few glazes taking them back to a more off white and making them differ from the face paint... coming along nicely

I would like to see some close-ups of the face area, to judge how the face-paint is comming along... the skin looks great, maybe a tad more high lights in some areas as Dennis mentioned

Cheers on the comments, fellas. It really helps! My computer is on the blink at the moment so I having to use an alternate means of getting pics to the net and I don't like the photoshop program the other computer has. That being said, I'll try to get some close ups and different angles of the face. The large tusks/teeth do make things hard to pick out. Good points on the teeth, Dennis--I should have pointed out they are just basecoated.

Outstanding so far. The face looks great but as Zappy said, some close ups would be great. The only thing i can add is maybe pick out a bit more highlights, as Dennis said. I would try to get them on the lower back and in the rib area in particular. That being said, wow.

I like the skintone on the Orc but I do think the colours on the face paint and the teeth are far too similar and there needs to be something to give more separation between them.

Got some more done. I got a new photoshop program for my birthday, but can't for the life of me figure out how to use the panorama view to get all the photos into one photo, so you'll have to see them individually. And a close up the face for Zappy: It is a funny sculpt--the lower jaw is very protruding with the tusks and lower teeth jutting out. The metallics will be next...

It's starting to look very nice! The eyes are really striking, so are the teeth. I do wonder how he could eat with his annoyingly big teeth

Skins nice, don't like the face paint at all, too much area covered for my tastes. A def case of a little would have gone a long way.

Coming on leaps and bounds, I would darken up the left side of the face under the cheek bone or make it flesh (dark), pants are excellent, good complimentary contrast to the flesh colour, keep it going

I like it like James I didn't like the face paint but now that you have done more work on it I have changed my mind and think it looks pretty good.

Glad I've been able to turn you about a bit on this one, Tim . What do you think of the metallics? I tried to follow Automaton's method more aggressively with this one.

Like everything about this one but the face, still not sold on it, sorry mate. I know how hard it is to do a skull type face painting, tried it on a Necromunda Bounty Hunter a while back. Just seems too much on the head.

No worries, Bru. Everyone has their own opinion and I'd rather hear an honest one. How would you do it?

Cheers buddy. I can see why you've gone for a skull paint, as when you look from above it has that skull shape, but personally I'd have gone with more of a striped effect warpaint, something that left a good area of green still on the head, especially near the teeth, so they really stood out. Again this is just my opinion, nothing wrong with what you've done.

Cheers, Bru. The pack comes with three of these big boys...maybe I'll go with the stripes next time 'round.
