It has been a long time coming, but I am finally getting back to the table. A friend of mine as recently gotten into WH40K and asked me to do some of the painting. Here is the test piece for the unit. It still has a ways to go, but you get the general idea. Hit me hard with critiques!

Nice to see you back at the painting table again mate. If I had to find something on this mini to improve it, it would be too add some more weathering to the armour he is at the moment a little too clean to be a proud devotee of Nurgle.

I agree with Tim, I think a couple of brown or dark green glazes would really darken and sicken this guy up a little bit more.
I have to give you top marks for the skin though. Any chance of a method?

Thanks for the quick replies, guys. Once I get a bit more shading and highlighting done, I'll be going back over it to dirty it up. I wanted to be careful and not cross the line between dirty and sloppy, if you know what I mean. Glad you like the skin, CC. I use mostly Reaper Master Series Paints, so you'll have to due a bit of conversion to GW if you don't have them. I started with Tanned Skin, highlighted with Aged Bone, and then glazed the area with very thin Clear Plum. After that, I put some very thin Brown Liner in the deepest crevices and selectively glazed the raise portions with a 1:1 mixture of Pale Lichen and Aged Bone to add a hint of gray-green. A guy over at the Reaper forums has been working on an interesting color matching project. He has taken colors from ALOT of different lines and tried to match them together. My understanding is that the numbers with each swatch represent some degree of difference between colors, with 0 being an exact match. The larger the number, the more difference in color. Generally, anything less than 5 will not be distinguishable to the human eye as a different color according to him. Interesting bit of work and at least will get you in the ballpark with colors. This one is about done. I tried to dirty him up a bit, hopefully without making it look sloppy. And another two in progress, about were I was with my first post originally:

Looks good mate, a little more highlight on the bone more towards white will compensate for the dulling effect of your varnish.

looks cool but a little too clean for what i think nurgle should be but a very tidy lot very nice only tiny criticism is the bottom pic where the leg has a plate and a tentacle (thing) the line where it meets at a v is a little untidy but thats a little petty but all in all cool the head looks cool also

Ahh, you are dead on, Inq. I have typically painted solitary minis--this is my first "army" piece. I have to admit, I am beginning to get to the "its good enough" stage already...and I have only done 3 (although the other 4 have paint on them to various degrees)! I was a bit lax with this one relatively compared to the other two. I'll be sure and go back and tidy it up. Good catch and thank you! I think I'll go back and dirty him up a bit more as well. The next chap should show that off a bit better.

As good as all the previous marines, I like the jaundiced head too, I do think he could be dirtier but that doesn't detract from a great mini.

And number 4. I tried to dirty him up a bit more with more dings and scratches. Thanks for the continued comments, everyone--it really helps to keep me motivated to push on with these.

Yummy! looks very nurgleish to me maybe add some shading here and there? Like on his sword arm?

Thanks, Andre. You're right--not just this last one, but probably the whole lot could use some more shading in selected spots. I add that to my list of things to touch up.

I know I am a bit late in jumping in on this, but maybe a tad bit more of rust spots on the armour, to really make them look rotted. Overall looking really good Jabber, glad to see some new stuff from you.

I like it apart from the eye glasses, I think that maybe you need to rethink them a bit as for me they are letting down the model. Which in itself is ace.
