Hi all! I have just bought and downloaded the first DVD in a series of DVD's from a pretty new company/website called "Miniature Mentor" . I have just started looking through the first 30-40 min of this splendid material and I'm thrilled! I thought I knew much but I'm learning again and that I like If you feel you are at some brink of not becomming any better, have u ever really wanna have a go at NMM and real layering techniques? Then this is for you! Filmed in first person in a stunning quality it can't get any better. The price is reasonable, imo, as it's not a Hollywood product and there are artists inwolved that are sharing their secrets and trades with us so I think they deserve the cost. And you can sign up for a monthly subscription wich in the end will be cheaper than to buy them one and one. I can't say anymore than check out this! It's in the Bible of Links, but for all the lazy ones I will put the link here as well. and oh... I will report more when I have gone through the almost 4 hours of video, and I can't wait for more tutes to apear, advanced ones like "painting white cloth", "NMM", "realistic skin-tones" and "painting in true-metall". There will also be a sculpting video... yummy. www.miniaturementor.com/index2.html

This is on my list of wants. I am going to buy the dvd as for me I like the feel of something like that rather than paying for a download. I did download the sample clip which I thought looked good and it is done by Alan C in my opinion just about the best fantasy painter in the world.

I sat like 2 hours in a row just watching him paint last night... and I really wanted a cleaned and primed Wolfen there and now, trying out things. It's damn inspiring to see this done like this.

I downloaded this last night and watched through it all. It is well worth the money and I am really looking forward to seeing more of the series. Highly recommended.

Yep I could i am just funny that way, it is the same with me with cd's and dvd's I like to have the item in the proper packaging, I guess I am just old fashioned that way.

Also the dvd is higher quality (uncompressed) at about 9 gigs, while the download sacrifices quality to get it down to the 2 gig area. And if you want to burn the download to dvd you have to convert the video files to dvd format again which will further affect the quality.

The DVD arrived yesterday and I am really looking forward to sitting down and learning some new stuff. I just hope they do a basing masterclass as that is my weakest area of the hobby.

Ok, so the DVDs sound like a better deal for me. That makes more sense for someone like me anyway.
I wonder though. What quality level do these DVDs teach? I am at the point where most three to twelve page tutorials are only giving me one or two tips that I actually use.
Also, is there one for Sculpting? I find the material available on the internet is very sparse and much of it is unhelpful.

I found the dvd very useful even though I won't use alot of the techniques shown but I believe anything learned is a bonus. As for sculpting I am not sure as this is a continual development I wouldn't be surprised to see on some time I the future.

They are supposed to have a sculpting one out around now.
I bought the download of their first video, but there current business model confuses me (the subscription service).

You are not the only one, it confuses me too. I think I will be buying one or two more dvd's from the range though as the first one I got (The Wolfen) is excellent.

I have a subscription and following all their tutorials. I found the one with the wolfen excellent. It's a technique I am trying to use for years and the video just gave me that extra push to start getting better results with it. The four small follow ups brings technique wise not much new. Some interesting color mixes (I like his nmm steel color). I downloaded last weekend the two first sculpting tutorials and I feel that here his business model starts to crack. The two tutorials are showing creating a sword and shield. This is basic converting stuff so not much new for me. In the mails I received from him it was clear that he didn't managed to finish the big sculpting tutorial (the raskal) and these two are quickly made to deliver something this month.
The subscription service gives him an income, but he must now deliver every month, I think he slightly underestimated the amount of work involved in making these kind of videos (from what I see this is not a professional who is doing this for his income).
I am gonna wait a bit since i want to have the raskal video, true metallics and the photoshop tutorial. After that I will decide to continue or stop the subscription.

Hm... from the sound of it, it would be better for me to buy the tutorials I want rather than get the subscription.
Another question: For what level painter are these tutorials made? I'm a far cry from a novice, and it is hard to find tutorials at my level.

Having no idea of your level it is hard to say whether these are for you, I think that they are aimed at experienced painters like myself to fine tune techniques they already know and also to show other techniques that are used by the worlds finest. I am by no means a novice and I found alot of useful information in the first one, I am waiting keenly for the metallics dvd even though I am often credited for the quality of my metallic painting.
