I lke most fantasy if it is well written, Tolkien is my favourite and I know that you have issues there. But aside from him Stephen Donaldson's the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever are brilliant , the first trilogy was great, the second was good but not as good as the first and now he is doing it again with a brilliant opener " The Runes of the Earth". I can't wait to read the next installments.

I remember the first time he read it he would hae to go outside and run around the yard because he would get so excited. I'm not sure how many times he has devoured those books - he is crazy! And it looks like I agree with most of your choices. Thomas Covenant chronicles are pretty good. I am waiting for all three of the new ones to come out before I read them. I hate starting a series and then having to wait for the books to be released.

Did you ever try Mordants need, The Mirror of Her Dreams and A Man Rides Through. They were pretty good too. I would also like to mention Terry Goodkind's The Sword Of Truth series and also Robin Hobb she also has some excellent trilogies out The Liveship Traders, The Fools Trialgy and the Assassin Trilogy bloody marvelous those.

Robin Hobb I love. Although I haven't read the latest trilogy (time issues again plus I want to go back and re-reead the Assassin trilogy). Terry Goodkin, I've seen the books but never picked them up so to speak. I will put them on my list of things to read (which is a surprisingly small list as I am a picky bastard with my time now).

Dragonlance books were also my favourites for a long time. Pity that they stay in my other house (which is in another country , I gotta take the time and pick them up once... I think we can also squeeze Terry Pratchett's books into the fantasy thread. They gave me lots of fun time
