It's that time of year again, snow is falling and i've got to get the skis ready..... anyhow i'm making a display base for Stern and a squad of grey knight termies and i'd like to make it like the first snows of winter. I've never tried to make a snow base and was thinking of buying the GW snow but then i thought surely there must be an easy way to make my own snow Any suggestions to a tried and tested snow effect?? Cheers in advance

I have heard that you can use baking soda or something. I think maybe woodland scenics have some nice stuff you can use. I would not go with the gw snow. The gw snow I have seen so far does not look realistic. I guess some railroad model shops have some great stuff. But I have never tried to make snow before, so I can't give you any advice, though I hope this will be of any use to you.
Cheers

Plaster of Paris is the way to go (though I've never tried it). I used it in some casting/mould making in a larger scale and it mixes very easily with water. Its extremely cheap for a huge bag. You just get a cup o' water and slowly add handfuls of plaster of paris until it becomes very thick, stirring all the while. Then you poor a tiny amount onto the base and you have extrmely easy, great looking snow. I've never done it but its a pretty tried and proven technique. I think your supposed to wear a surgical mask to avoid all the powder.

Well why not get some real snow? I suppose it would melt, then get the whole base wet, then wash off the paint... errm... I think I'll have to go away and think properly on this one...

My personal preference is a mixture of GW snow and baking soda (roughly one to one), white glue and water. That is what I used for my WoM entry as well as the other dwarf I did (check my gallery section). Mix it into a paste and lay it on. I'll try and track down some tutorials for you as well.

Mix baking soda and pva glue and a little water to make a paste, then add to the base, then sprinkler over a little more baking soda and let dry, then blow off the excess powder what is left gives you the crystaline look you get with fresh snow.

Thanks for all the help everyone I now know that baking powder isn't just the same as bicarbonate! It goes yellow and fizzles a lot! Natural bicarbonate is dirt cheap and i'm looking forward to try it out now, i'll be posting it up in the WIPs soon.....

For reference the Bicarbonate worked out absolutely great... I had one of those lucky cock-ups, after i put the pva/bicarbonate paste on it dried out vaguely transparent, i thought oh bollox but it actually looked amazing, it is like frozen snow, showing through the colours beneath, i then highlighted where i wanted the fresh snow with some skull white and put another coat of the paste over it.. hey presto.. dogs danglies... i am so chuffed, thanks.
Pic to follow
