It's a simple question, do you undercoat your models to put it simply. I'm curious to see what everyone uses, and if you do answer, say why you use that method. I use chaos black spray, lets face it, you don't want to spend hours undercoating one model at a time.

black spray all the time, if i dont have spray, i dont paint i find that spray gives a nice texture, paint gives it an uneven lumpy feel i never use white... i used it once, but that was because it was a trade with matt (lotrcrown) and he undercoats in white ;D

I have moved away from spray paint, I find that even after spraying you have to go back over with paint anyway to cover the areas that the spray missed, so now I just paint the undercoat on, it takes longer but the finish is far superior IMO.

I know that some people go for grey but I have not tried that yet so don't know whether or not there are benefits from using it.

One coat of Chaos Black Spray and a wash of thinned down Chaos black paint...
I prefer the 'duller' effect of a black primer and it saves a lot of hassle compared to white when you have to paint in the hard to get areas... if you miss a bit it won't be noticable.

I use Plastikote's Super Primer Grey, for all my mini's, not as harsh as white, but easier to work on top of than black. Plus you can cheat on some colours especially black, by thinning it slightly, so some of the undercoat shows through, giving you an instant highlight, that just needs a tiny top highlight to finish.

Depends on the mini. I have used white, gray, and black spray ons as well as white brush on primer. If I am looking for a "darker" mini, I will frequently use black. For the a brighter mini, I'll use white. I like spray on better, but have been having problems with it going on "fuzzy" at times, so I have been using brush on primer as of late.

Depends on the mini too. I have GW sprays of black and white, and also a Vallejo white. Normally I like white more, but sometimes I use black, if I think it's better for that mini and the planned color scheme.
I also have a can of Boltgun Metal, but I used that only once to prime a unit of chaos marines.

I voted Chaos Black spray, as that is what I mostly use, but for certain models (horses etc.) I use Skull White.

I only use chaos black spray slightly, as i'm scared of over doing it and covering all the details of the model up.
