So I've got a guy at my club here who wants me to paint his 2000pt space marine army. He's never commissioned anything before, and I've never painted on commission before (I've tried selling things after painting them though). He's given me the army list as well as a general paint scheme (red and silver). It's all infantry, and I think around 80-90 models. He has all the models so I don't have to buy them, all I have to do is paint and base them. He was hoping I could do it for around $350-$400, it sounds ok to me but I'm just a little unsure... Once I factor in paint and what not I think $500 is more than reasonable. Now of course I'm not painting each model to show standard but I am going to do a "good" job on them. There really isn't much in the way of schedule other than he wants it ready for Conflict Calgary next year (so I have almost a full year to do it).
So what do you think? Should I do it? Is the price too high? Too low? I know some commission things out for $1000-$2000 but I just don't think I can do that (paint to that skill or charge someone that much).

So say 500 $ for 80 = 6.25 $ each... i don't know $ to kr;- but if i think of english money that's 3.5 £ each ... ... i would need to be paid that amount for every 20mins i spend painting to make me earn a little more than the bread limit here Could you paint 1 per hour (considering they are done in batch)?? If so... i'd be charging 80 X a decent enough hourly rate to be worth doing Personally, with it being so many, i'd drop it. Your hobby will become a laborious job with very little recompense, even at 2000 $ when you consider the time involved

I have painted minis as presents or to help friends, though. I'm pretty sure, If I needed to paint that many figures under deadline pressure, I would hate all space marine minis afterwards

The thing is I can do it in chunks, I dont have to do the entire army at once, I can paint a unit, figure out how long it'll take me to do the rest and then decide. I figure with the detail i'll put in I can probably get a 10 man squad done in 1-2 weeks so I should be able to finish well before conflict... I realise it's not alot of money, but to be honest i think it's somewhat reasonable. Still, I will have to think on it more...

I'd go with menace's suggestion - unless you are really keen to help him out. You'd probably be limited on your own projects as well trying to get that lot done for not a lot in return.

Seems a fair bit underpriced to me. At least as the speed I paint (which is admittedly a snail's pace), $6.25 per mini would be far less than minimum wage. I suppose you could get a marine (or any man sized model) and see how long it would take to paint it to the standard you had in mind. If you can't get it done in an hour and a half or two, I don't know if it would be worth the effort. Another thing to consider is the "intangible" benefits; i.e. recognition for the work to drum up additional work. From what I have heard from other painters (I have no experience on this subject myself), it is more difficult to make good money painting masses of models to tabletop standard versus individual models to a showcase standard. I suppose if you primered them in red to save time on the basecoats, it might not be so bad. I think the main concern would be the sheer number of minis. 80-90 minis is a lot and the last thing I would want to do is spoil the fun of your hobby by making it a job. A rather extended babble from someone who has no experience selling minis...hehe take it for what is worth (probably not all that much ).

The standard is basically table top. So basecoated and based. I planned on doing a bit more detail but i figure base coat, and edge high lights and a sanded base for the standard models and a bit more effort on the hq and what not... With that in mind I think I can paint a unit in a couple hours, with minimum effort.

Sorry Tim, I only had a minute to post that, and I forgot to log in before I started posting... Is there any way that we can get a log in feature along with the posting feature similar to CMoN?

Yes there is mate, the problem is that when I enable that it makes the forum non viewable to non members and if you click the site link all you get is the log in page, that is why I disabled it so that any one thinking of joining could have a look around first. I will have another look and see if there is a way around that.

OK. I know there have been a couple times when I've written out some pretty lengthy replies only to lose them to not being logged in... Again, I'm sorry about that. I didn't mean to cause any problems.
