Cool mate, we have a graphics tablet (not sure how to use it mind you ) but I'm not very good at drawing so I wouldn't be good at it anyway!

I would avoid an expensive wacom tablet if you just draw for fun! mine was a bottom of the line one (80 quid i think) a5 size but came with a mouse as well. i am sure i have seen the latest wacom bottom line one for £40 without a mouse which is very reasonable. mind you photoshop cs2 did not like my tablet and it was really slow - worked fine with painter and cs and it workls fine with cs3 as well.
have fun with it and compliments to your nephew on jedi ben it is chartacterful.

Thanks again guys. My 10 year old nephew Ben is a cool kid! He lives 2000 miles away so I only see him once a year. We keep in touch through Email and he may be visiting for a couple weeks in July. I am trying to get him into the minis but he is a video gamer (typical)... I learned to draw free hand and though I didn't pursue art in school past a "figure study and sculpture course" in University, I still like to dabble in it... My free hand stuff is better (I think) but this whole tablet thing is kinda cool. My tablet is rated for 512 for pressure and I have read artists such as Brian Bolland swear by the 1024 pressure tablets. As for software I am using an entry level program called Art Rage II but my wife has the professional Adobe Software edition which I may try once I get the handle on the tablet... Thanks for the comments! Here is what I did today ArrOOoo!

Nice! It's really coming on now mate! How dare you! I'm a video gamer (in fact I spent a lot more time on games than minis ) but I still do the hobby!

forget photoshop for drawing - get corel painter. Photoshop is great for graphic design and photo's but I think needs alot more skill to achieve painterly pieces with. Corel Painter is good to go for beginners and proffessionals alike with some fantastic brushes all ready to use. Interface is not as good as photoshop but it is fairly similiar. I recommend you check it out and try to acquire it if you can!!! I used Artrage 1, that's not too bad actually but I dont think version 2 would work on my pc for some reason.

Corel painter eh? I'll have to look for that one! I want to try doing a comic strip and I need to do the panels etc. and art rage doesn't have line or circle drawing tools... Did a lot on the drawing today... ArrOOoo!

Yeah those are great! I've been fooling around with the airbrush tool in art rage 2 but I haven't quite mastered it. Here I switch to pencil for outlining (just doing some roughing in) but I don't know... I'm gonna look for Corel and see what else it can do. Here is the latest ... ArrOOoo!

Check out this link for a quick example of some of the brushes I have knocked up for you, bear in mind this is a very small selection and I just did a couple of strokes. My favourite is 2b pencil used with the wet blender to give it a nice pencil/watercolour look - i think its used quite alot in many peoples artwork these days. Go here for my example.... i64.photobucket.com/albums/h182/dogfacedboy_uk1/painterexample.jpg

Cool brush strokes Dog! I went and downloaded the Corel Painter X 30 day trial. It is gonna take me 30 days just to figure out all the controls That's why I love the ease of picking up a pencil and paper ... Here's what I did with some of the tools on Corel (just using their add ons)

I'm glad you have downloaded the trial, I thought my brush taster would get you into it! It is a great program and used in conjunction with photoshop you will have all the tools you need (along with a scanner of course for getting your hand drawn stuff onto the pc) to have alot of fun drawing. It can't match Photoshop for ease of use and interface but is alot simpler to actually get started on the artwork without having to make your own brushes and playing with options!! The day photoshop gets the same brush toolset as painter incorporated into it is the day that Corel are doomed!!
Don't worry about learning the controls, so long as you how layers work and how to set up your document size and resolution you can start using brushes and get going on the drawing!! Be wary of making mistakes though, painter x does not have the luxery of a history pallette like photoshop and only has 32 levels of undo! Use lots of layers. I see you picture's starting to get pretty busy there!!!

I need to get a tablet. Then invest *cough*download*cough* in coreldraw9 (i think thats the name?) or just use it on illustrator. The problem is I would rather get a more expensive one, possible A4 or even A3 because I know I would use it extensively and professionally and an A5 or similar wouldn't hold up to what I need from it. Problem is im a student. And skint. Damn holidays.
Cool drawings BTW! Great stuff for just playing around and getting used to it!

Thanks guys!
I do think you are limited by the quality of the tablet. I have yet to try a high end tablet and if I use my cheapie enough times (cost 75.00) I will probably go out and purchase a high end one ...
"Cough cough" the software is expensive but the tools are impressive on Corel and Adobe...
I am getting back into my Triathlon training so I will be finding less time to draw ... Ah well the draw backs of getting in shape ....

To be honest I don't think you need A3 at all Matty. A4 gives more than enough usable space and even with A4 it is often handy to remap the area so it is smaller. Really can't think of a reason for getting an A3 one unless you want to look rich to your friends! Total overkill I think. A dude I know who does freelance work for Black Library amongst other things uses an A5 Wacom for everything and it doesn't seem to hold him back at all. @ Reddogfive - Looks like you are off to a good start, but I think that you may benefit from going back to basics a bit with your work. Looking at the progress of your 100 Kingdoms picture, I don't think you've put enough work into the initial linework. You want to get it as perfect as you can and everything else will follow on and make for a much better looking piece. Break the creatures down into basic forms and make sure they have the correct perspective before layering more detail over and your picture will instantly have more substance. Next you need to really work out where your light source is and focus on getting hilights and shades in the right places. Once again this will add substance to the creatures. You may consider working in black and white to perfect this. You can then work painted layers of colour over it later.

Hey Lono, thanks for the critique! It is excellent that you took the time to look and write out what my picture is lacking!
I do draw with pencil on paper and I am new to the tablet and software thing.
I did "skip" pretty quickly from concept to airbrushing the 100 kingdoms pic. (partly due to making the deadline for the contest which I missed)...
Will spend more time planning out my next project!

But who doesn't want to show off to thier mates lol I was also under the naive impression (i could have done more research, but I couldn't be buggered at the time) that bigger = more features etc. At the time I don't think I meant what I said in such a literal sense but it came out like that. Cheers for the tips/hints though Lono.

Pretentious? Nah, not really Matty, I was under exactly the same impression when I started looking into getting one, but it turns out size doesn't really matter! As for my buying of a Wacom, I rather foolishly 'invested' my cash in online poker, and I can't quite afford one any more.
