This is the start of my Uruk Hai army. Haven't done much else but gluing plastic bits together, and even a drunk monkey can do that I haven't made a army list, so I'm just putting minis together and hoping that eventually they will form an army ;D And yes, I have two army projects at once (and hunderds of other unfinished minis). The good thing about making two armies at once is that you can work on the army you feel like doing. I ofthen get bored working on the same army for a long period of time, and now I can work on two armies at the same time. It's ofthen one month of Uruks, and the next month I work on my Black Templars. [ The uruk swordsmen I have done so far Two simple conversions to make the army a bit more interesting (you don't get that much variety in LOTR minis) I have shortened down the pikes of the uruks. I don't like the pikes of the uruks, they are too tall and you can never get good use of pikes that long in a war. The uruk pikes were after all ment to be used in Helms Deep, and not in small war parties. I have clipped off the pike by their hand, and I'm going to clue it back on after I have shortened it down a bit. This is what I got so far. More pictures are hopefully coming soon.

The point of a pike is that it is meant to be long! Anyway, nice one so far, if you want a guide or anything on painting them give me a shout, I'm an expert on Uruks!

I know that the pike is supposed to be long, but it just look unnatural to be able to fight with a four meter tall pike ;D I would like a toturial on uruks. Uruks was some of the first minis I painted, and i have painted lots of them. But that was ages ago, even before I had learned to highlight ;D I will do a couple of test minis first and try different techniques. So I would appreciate some uruk painting tips ;D

The advantage of a pikeman is you can have 3 men in an attack line on one! With Uruks depending on numbers against higher skilled armies it means in a battle line you can have a swordman attacking plus a spearman attacking plus a pikeman attacking a single warrior, giving you 3 dice against one (as long as they are all touching base).... but i don't think any player would complain if you had slighter shorter pikes (unless they're a bad loser ;D)

the ancient Greeks used long spears in their phalanx's to great effect, they also carried short swords too so when the pike was done with they switched weapons, the pikes on the Uruks are supposed to represent the weapons used in the siege of Helms Deep.Excellent weapons for spearing unfortunate elves and men that happen to fall from the walls. I have a load of Uruks myself to paint so I will watch this with interest.

As Tim said, armies used to use spears when their enemies were charging at them, then once a few warriors were speared on the end they drop the pikes and use their swords. Simple! Kebab anyone?

I will still short down the pikes. The pikes are still pikes, only a little shorter ;D I will put up some more pictures soon.
And it also make the minis much easier to transport without breaking the spear.

This is a test model for the army. I am very happy with how the metals (on the torso) turned out. The pictures is very bad, but you kind of get the idea. I used glazes instead of inkwashes. Ink will make the armour really gloss, but glazes will make the armour more matte and I think that suits the minis better. What do you think? The uruk test model: Closeup:

as you say it the pics isn't too good so that makes it harder to judge . But form what I can see it looks really nice I might suggest some dark brown glazes too, to make it look dless clean Cheers, André

Thanks The glazes actually have a bit brown in them, but it's hard to see. I will try some brown washes. I think I'll go for 10:1 black:brown. I have another test model too, so I might try more brown on him, maybe equal quantities brown and black. Cheers
