Hi everyone, just finished this absolutely amazing miniature, Artemis. The whole model practically painted itself, especially the flesh, which i am especially pleased about, as I have only ever painted male, darker flesh before. The shield was a bane trying to get a solid metaillic colour on the black, i even tried painting it all metallic then stencilling the black over, but it just wasn't working properly. But im pretty pleased with the overall look. CMoN voting linkHope you like it, cheers.

Hey matty, Firstly, I added a nudity warning to the subject, not that anyone here will heed it being the the 'active' population of WoM is 99.9% male! You've done a great job on this mini mate, but then again, it's always easier to paint a nekkid woman! The shield and helmet look great and the skin tone is just right, and that's all I'm saying... I don't want to sound like a pervert!

Sorry, i forgot about the warning. Painting nekkid ladys is great fun! Its always a bit wierd when you brush paint onto the breasts lol
I think il paint the HassleFree Concubine next, another gorgeous sculpt.
Cheers for the comments. Il try and get a shot of the face tomorrow. I take my photos at a slightly elevated angle to get the base and the entire mini in, but because she is looking down its missed her face.

Very nice job on this one, Matty! I really like the freehand on the shield. The skin tones are very good as well. Just a couple of critiques--I think a bit stronger darklining would help her pop a little more, particularly along the shoulder strap and helmet/hair interface and the helmet/plume; also I think a few more glazes for the helmet would be good.

Nice work, Matty! Very smooth and nice, natural colours. However, I think this looks rushed in many ways. I happen to know you did this one rather quickly and it shows, I'm afraid. First of all, most details lack definition. Darklining, or better yet, narrow blended shadows properly placed around details would improve this quite much. Another thing that would make details more defined and also add more depth to the entire mini is to go a bit further with both shading and highlighting. This mini has large areas and plenty of space to do nice, warm blends from deep shadows to bright highlights. Some areas look almost like they've only been base coated. Some things look a bit untidy as well. Now, some of this could be an effect of the lack of darklining or similar, but on the shield front there are definitely some room for improvement on the tidiness. The base definitely looks rushed to me. There's not much depth in the colours there and the tuft of grass looks like it's been glued on horisontally. Now, don't think I'm bashing your paintjob here... What you've done on it looks good. It's just that it only looks half-done to me. If I were you I would spend a day or two more on this lovely mini. She deserves it! ;D

I wouldn't know where to start on this one, the large flesh surface area looks daunting but i think you've done a solid job. As ritual pointed out, i agree the detailing needs to be defined with a subtle darklining, at the moment the areas tend to merge and there is a lot of similarities in colour that encourage the eye to blend them... ie gold helm to golden brown hair to rich flesh and to gold again at the hilt of the sword... a few hours and hey presto

Very nice painting this is one that I keep meaning to buy . The skintone is nice, I do feel though that the gold could do with a little more work in places.

Cheers for all the comments, darkling seems to be the biggest problem which everybody is picking up on, iv never managed darklining very well so its something il have to practice on.
The shadows are deep in certain areas such as under they arse cheeks, under the breasts, bottom of the legs and arms etc, but because of the angle of the photo you can't see them to well, il take better photos later and try to get a different angle. Although the skintone was the first time i have painted soft tones, and I wasn't sure how far to go with the highlights.
TBH the grass stuff on the base does my head in when im applying it, its too long and stiff and justs sticks all over the place. I don't mind it being there, so il just leave it this time.
Defo agree about the tidyness of the shield front, just the bronze was very weak, and it was taking lots of coats just to get it even, perhaps just using a brown colour in th future with metallic medium added?
Iv started on the concubine mini now, which il take all this advice and use it on that, and I may go back to this for an hour or two and improve some sections. Though i will definately be buying another one!

with the long grass i make a wee bunch then hold it together with a pair of tweezers then hold it on the pva until it's a bit dry, i then spread it out a bit and when dry, as it is usually too long, i run a lighter flame over it too shape it!

I use to make a small hole in the base to stick the long grass into when I attach it. Before the glue is dry I make sure the bundle is not too tidy and orderly. That usually works well for me.

Iv taken more shots at a better angle, you can now see majority of the shading and the face a bit better: (And a very revealing pic!)

Done some changes and touch ups. Added darklining to the helmet/hair, scabbard strap, hand holding the weapon and the metaillic sections on the helmet. Iv reglazed more browns onto the helmet and shield for shading, and highlighted them up with silver mixes. Took the skin tone up 2 more levels, can't get much brighter IMO, would have to add more shading to get added contrast, but the extra HL should accentute the shades a bit more (hopefully) Iv put some browns glazes onto the boots. Added browns into the base so it doesn't look so plain. Would love some more feedback please.

Defo agree about the tidyness of the shield front, just the bronze was very weak, and it was taking lots of coats just to get it even, perhaps just using a brown colour in th future with metallic medium added? Whenever I paint golds, I always start with a basecoat of Tin Bitz. This colour makes an excellent base for subsequent coverings of brnze, brass or gold colours. It does need to be well thinned down to make the covering smoother and in doing this it might take a couple of coats to get a good coverage. I am to thin it down to such an extent that the pigment needs regular stirring up as the pigment is heavier than the suspension fluid and therefore settles out quicker.

Yeah, this looks definitely improved! Things are much better defined and you have given everything more depth, it seems. I like it, and hopefully you do too!

Yep, and now looking back I can see the improvements. Cheers for pushing me that little bit further everyone.
Ta for that tip Tim, il give it a go sometime, Lono also posted over at CMoN to put gold over a snakebite leather basecoat.

The skin is just awesome (what else can I say, I am a man lol ). I don't like the shield so much though On the back of the shield, there is a border between the bronze and black that looks a bit hurried, and some of the bronze parts is not as good as the rest. But other than that, it is a amazing mini!
