This is a quick word of caution, I found out to my cost today that you should never listen to agressive music whilst painting fine detail. I was listening to The Exploited's F**k The System album and totally messed up something I was working on.

I always listen to agressive music when I'm painting. Well... Not always 'agressive' but usually something fast and loud.

I often paint in silence. Well, I don't listen to music, radio, don't watch tv, just let my thoughts flowing.

I'm with Endrem. Usual it is just the sound of my own breathing. If it is a basecoat or something that requires minimal concentration, sometimes I keep a conversation. On occassion, I'll do prep work in front of a TV.

I prefer silence or some atmospheric, beat-less music like ambient or industrial with a moderate noise level. Mostly, I paint in silence though. Music, at least what I listen to, often claim my awareness and thus distracts me from the painting.

I too burn incense and listen to music, it is usually Muse or Panic at the Disco, but that is what I listen to all the time. I fined that music actually helps me paint better. If I can split my concentration on both things it helps me relax and not get so tense when I’m painting small stuff, if that makes any since.

I have been painting the elf wardancer lord and listened to Enya whilst doing it. If I need fast and agressive then Disturbed is always a good choice.
