This is just a short write up on how I do tall grass. It is pretty simple and straightforward, but I think it reduces the mess a bit and allows you to get the grass placed precisely where you want it.
Step 1: Gather the tools
Pretty simple really. scissors, superglue, the grass, and something to tie it off. In this case I used thin plyable metal wires, but string would work just as well.
Step 2: Tie off the grass
Here you take two pieces of string or wire and tie them around the section of grass in question. The distance between the string doesn't need to be too far, just enough to get your scissors in between. Obviously, it is at this step you decide how large of a clump of grass you want.
Step 3: Cut the grass
Simple enough. You now have 2 pieces with a flat base. This is key, because it allows you a nice even base to later glue to the model. Once you have made the cut, drop a small bit of superglue onto the base.
Here I have removed the securing wires and the grass stays together due to the superglue.
Step 4: Cut the grass to length
Trim the grass to the desired height. The superglue also holds the base firm so that you can fan out the tuft as grass as little or as much as you wish. On the left tuft, I fanned it out considerably for more of a fern-like appearance, while the right is more your standard configuration.
Step 5: Apply the grass to the model
Once the superglue dries and you have trimmed and shaped the grass to your liking, put a small dab of superglue on the base and press on the your tuft of grass.
I hope you find this simple write-up helpful!
